P20 series: basic colors and wide notch
Both the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro are made from a combination of metal and glass. The P20 is available in the colors black and blue. Huawei also offers the Pro device in purple. The selfie camera and the speaker are incorporated in a fairly wide notch at the top of the screen. Smartphones from the P20 series do not have a standard connection for earbuds. This means you must use a headset with a USB-C plug.
P30 (Pro): striking colors and narrow notch
With the combination of glass and metal, the housing of the P30 series also looks luxurious. Furthermore, the colorful design of the P30 (Pro) stands out. Both devices are available in black, blue, and white/purple. The P30 Pro also has an orange version. Because the notch of the selfie camera is small, it doesn't disturb you when watching a movie. The P30 has a standard headphone connection, the Pro version doesn't.
P20 (Pro): black and white camera and optical image stabilization
The Huawei P20 has a dual camera. In addition to the 20-megapixel standard camera, the device is equipped with a 12-megapixel telephoto lens that lets you zoom. The P20 Pro also has an additional 8-megapixel black and white camera. This camera helps with taking more detailed photos. In addition, the P20 Pro has optical image stabilization. Because of this you won't be bothered by moving images. Both phones feature a 24-megapixel selfie camera.
P30 (Pro): wide angle lens, optical zoom, and night mode
In addition to a 40-megapixel standard lens and a telephoto lens, both the devices from the P30 series are equipped with an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens. With this, you can easily capture large groups and wide landscapes. Moreover, with the P30 Pro you can zoom in up to 10 times with no loss of quality thanks to the optical zoom. Both devices have an advanced night mode, with the P30 Pro taking particularly sharp night photos. Both smartphones have a 32-megapixel selfie camera.
P20 (Pro): fingerprint sensor under screen
The Huawei P20 has a 5.8-inch full HD screen. The display of the Pro also has full HD quality, but is slightly larger at 6.1 inches. Another difference is in the type of screen. The IPS-LCD screen of the P20 is less energy efficient than that of the Pro and the P30 series. This affects the battery duration. Both devices from the P20 series have a fingerprint sensor under the screen.
P30 (Pro): fingerprint in screen
Just like the Huawei P20 series, the P30 and P30 Pro feature a full HD screen. The difference lies in the dimensions: the P30 devices have a slightly larger screen. For example, the OLED display of the P30 is 6.1 inches and that of the Pro a whopping 6.47 inches. A major difference compared to the P20 is the position of the fingerprint sensor. This is, in fact, incorporated into the screen of the P30 series.
Storage and computing power
P20 (Pro): 128GB storage, 4GB / 6GB main memory
The P20 and P20 Pro are both equipped with 128GB of storage memory. For example, you can save 25,000 songs or 120 films in high quality. Both devices are equipped with the Kirin 970 processor, which allows you to switch quickly between different apps. The Huawei P20 has a working memory of 4GB and the Pro has 6GB. This means that the P20 Pro can handle apps as heavy as the P30.
P30 (Pro): 128GB / 256GB storage, 6GB / 8GB main memory
Both the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro have 128GB storage capacity by default. Moreover, with the P30 Pro you also have the choice of 256GB storage. This is enough for 50,000 songs. Both devices are equipped with the fast Kirin 980 processor. The P30 series makes a leap in terms of working memory. The P30 offers 6GB, while the 8GB RAM of the P30 Pro allows you to switch smoothly between various heavy games and apps.
Battery and charging
P20 (Pro): Huawei Supercharge (22W)
The P20 and P20 Pro have a good battery with a capacity of 3400mAh and 4000mAh. With normal use, you can easily get through the day without having to recharge. In addition, the P20 series supports Huawei Supercharge (22W). This allows you to charge the P20 to 60% in half an hour. The P20 Pro comes with its larger battery at that time up to 50%. Both smartphones are not suitable for wireless charging.
P30 (Pro): Huawei Supercharge (22W/40W)
With a capacity of 3650mAh and 4200mAh, the P30 and P30 Pro have a slightly larger battery. Because the telephones are also energy efficient, you can get through 2 days without charging in the meantime. Just like the P20, the P30 has Huawei Supercharge (22W). With the Supercharge (40W) on the P30 Pro, Huawei takes it a step further. This phone is charged to 70% within half an hour. In addition, the P30 Pro is the second ever Huawei device to support wireless charging.
On the outside it's striking that the devices from the P30 series have a larger screen and are available in more striking colors. In terms of camera, the P30 series is a big step forward compared to the P20 series. The night mode and the optical zoom, in particular, offer great value for money. If we look further under the hood, we see that the P30 series is also considerably better than the P20 series in terms of storage, computing power, and battery.
