Our vlogger Jurgen has already reviewed the OnePlus 8T for you. In this video, you can see what he thinks of the device.
Screen and size
OnePlus 8T: large screen, high refresh rate
The OnePlus 8T has a 6.55-inch Full HD screen. The screen is large, so it's difficult to operate the smartphone with one hand. On top of that, the device doesn't fit in every pocket. Thanks to the Full HD resolution, your favorite films and series look sharp. And since the screen refreshes 120 times per second, animations look smooth. You see this when you scroll through your Instagram timeline or when you play a 3D game, for example.
OnePlus Nord: more manageable screen, lower refresh rate
With a 6.44-inch Full HD screen, the OnePlus Nord is slightly more manageable than the 8T. It's still difficult to operate the device with one hand though. In terms of resolution, the OnePlus Nord and 8T are nothing different. You can also see many details of your favorite films and series on the OnePlus Nord. The refresh rate is 90 times per second. The screen refreshes more often than the average smartphone, but less often than the OnePlus 8T. As a result, animations on the OnePlus Nord look less smooth.
OnePlus 8T: suitable for the most demanding tasks
The OnePlus 8T has the powerful Snapdragon 865 processor and 8GB RAM. This makes the device suitable for the most demanding tasks. You can use demanding apps such as Photoshop or graphic 3D games without the smartphone slowing down. On top of that, you can switch between different apps quickly. The 128GB storage offers enough space for your apps and files, but it's not expandable. The 8T will be released with Android 11. You're assured of software updates up to Android 13 in 2022.
OnePlus Nord: smartphone for everyday use
With the less powerful Snapdragon 765G processor, the OnePlus Nord is mainly suitable for everyday use. The Nord is available with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM and with 256GB storage and 12GB RAM. This storage isn't expandable. You can use social media and apps like Netflix without any problems. The 256GB version of the Nord is even suitable for demanding apps such as image editing programs and 3D games. The device runs on Android 10 out of the box. You'll receive software updates up to at least Android 12 in 2021.
OnePlus 8T: 4500mAh, fully charged in 40 minutes
How long the large 4500 mAh battery of the OnePlus 8T lasts depends on your use. If you set the refresh rate of the screen to 60Hz, the device will easily last a day. But at 120Hz, the battery drains faster. That's not a problem, because with the new fast charging protocol Warp Charge 65 you can charge the OnePlus 8T very fast. The included charger charges the device to 58% within 15 minutes. A full charge takes 38 minutes. That's much faster than an average smartphone from 2020.
OnePlus Nord: 4115mAh, less fast charging
The OnePlus Nord's 4115mAh battery is of average size. With this battery, it also depends on your use and settings how long the smartphone lasts without charging. When you set a higher refresh rate, the battery will drain faster. With average use, you have to recharge the OnePlus Nord when you get home from work or school. With Warp Charge 30T, charging isn't as fast as with the OnePlus 8T, but faster than with many other smartphones. You can charge the device for 39% within 15 minutes. Charging to 100% takes a little over an hour.
OnePlus 8T: sharp photos, but no telephoto lens
In terms of cameras, the top device from OnePlus doesn't come close to other flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra or the iPhone 11 Max. This is partly due to the lack of a telephoto lens to zoom in far with. Still, you can take beautiful photos with the OnePlus 8T. The 48-megapixel standard camera allows you to take sharp photos, while the 16-megapixel wide-angle lens allows you to fully capture large buildings. The device also has a macro lens for close-up photos and a monochrome lens for black and white photos.
OnePlus Nord: almost the same quality, no monochrome lens
In terms of quality, the cameras of the OnePlus Nord and 8T are very similar. You can take the same quality photos with the 48-megapixel standard camera. The 8 megapixel wide-angle lens performs slightly less well. Just like the OnePlus 8T, the OnePlus Nord has a macro lens, but it also has a depth sensor. This sensor measures depth, creating a depth of field effect in your photos. This is nice with a portrait photo, for example. Unlike the OnePlus 8T, the OnePlus Nord doesn't have a monochrome lens.
Operating system: Android Oxygen OS
The OnePlus 8T and OnePlus Nord both run on Android. Do you want to switch from an iPhone? Remember that the operating system works completely differently. You notice this in the design, but also in the number of available apps. It also doesn't work as well with other Apple products. OnePlus has its own spin on Android with Oxygen OS. This means icons, colors, and menu structures look different than on other Android smartphones. The OnePlus Android skin is accessible, but keep in mind you may have to get used to it for a few days.
Although the OnePlus Nord offers remarkable value for money, the OnePlus 8T shows that it is more of a top device in various areas. Thanks to the strong processor, the 8T is suitable for the most demanding tasks, unlike the Nord. This super-fast device will never slow down and comes with Android 11 out of the box. On top of that, the battery is larger, but the high charging speed is particularly impressive. In terms of screen and camera, both smartphones are very similar, but images look smoother and your photos are sharper on the 8T.
