How do I connect my Xbox One X?
In the box
Before you start, unpack the console and keep all parts nearby. With a standard Xbox One X, you'll find the following in the box:
- The Xbox One X console
- The Xbox One X controller
- AA batteries (2x)
- Power cable
- An HDMI cable
Before I really get started, I first need to choose a good place for my Xbox One X. This place must meet the following requirements:
- Enough space: You must have enough space to place the Xbox horizontally without any items on, next to, or under the console.
- Ventilation: At an open, ventilated location, the console can keep itself cool while gaming.
Step 1: HDMI
Connect the included HDMI cable to the Video Out port on the Xbox One X (this is marked at the port). Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI port of your TV or monitor.
Step 2: Wired internet (optional)
I connect an internet cable to an empty internet port on my router and connect the other end to the Xbox One X. Do you prefer to use WiFi? Then you can skip this step. Connecting to WiFi comes later in the step-by-step plan.
Step 3: Connecting the power supply
I connect the power supply to the leftmost port on the back of the Xbox One console. I then connect the other end of the power cable to a power outlet.
Step 4: Turning on the Xbox One X
I'm now ready to turn on the Xbox. I place the included batteries in the controller and briefly press the button with the Xbox logo. Both the controller and the Xbox One X will now switch on. I can also turn on the console by pressing the Xbox logo on the right.
Step 5: setting up the Xbox One X
I turn on my TV and search for the correct HDMI channel (usually 1, 2, or 3) using the menu or the input/source button on my remote control. The Xbox menu now appears and I follow the steps. For example, I choose my language and I choose my wired or wireless internet connection.
Step 5.1: Connecting to the internet
If you have a wired connection, choose 'wired connection' now. The Xbox will now test your connection. To connect to my WiFi, I choose 'Wireless Connection'. Select your WiFi password and enter the corresponding password.
Step 5.2: Updating
Now that I'm connected to the internet, I choose my location (the Netherlands). Now my Xbox can search for the latest software. The Xbox automatically starts downloading and installing the latest updates. I advise you to grab a drink, because this may take a while depending on your internet connection.
Step 5.3: Logging in
Time to log in to my Microsoft account. Don't have one yet? Then create it now. (Do you have Windows 10 on your laptop or computer? Then you can use this (personal) account to log in).
Step 6: Image settings
To check your image settings, press the Xbox button on your controller. Next, navigate to the gear and choose the image and sound settings. In this menu, choose the correct resolution (usually 1080p or 4K). Do you have a 4K TV? Then choose 'allow 4K' on the right side of the menu. From now on you can select the 4K resolution. 4K not visible? Then switch back and forth between different input types.
Step 7: Gaming
Now place your game disc in the reader or buy and/or download the games from the marketplace. If you've linked Play Anywhere games to your Microsoft account (like Gears of War 4), you can now also play them on your Xbox. Have fun!
