Expert review of the Lenovo IdeaPad S145-15IWL laptops (2019)
The Lenovo IdeaPad S145-15IWL series
The models in the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 series are suitable laptops for basic tasks like writing reports or surfing the web. The laptops in this series come in the following versions:
- Processor: Intel Pentium, Intel Core i3 to i5.
- RAM: 4GB to 8GB.
- Storage capacity: 128GB to 256GB SSD.
The first thing you'll notice when you take the Lenovo IdeaPad S145-15IWL 81MV00HRMH out of the box is the weight. I can easily hold the laptop in the air with one hand. And I'm not a bodybuilder. The laptop is fairly light with 1.85 kilograms, so you can easily carry it with you in a backpack to college or your workplace without getting a sore back.
Fancy looking plastic
The build quality of the laptop isn't high-end. But it's good within this price range. The plastic bottom and the plastic bezels around the screen don't feel very sturdy in particular. The screen is shaky and light vibrations make the screen shake. The laptop screen shakes when your classmates close their lecture bench a little too hard, for example. You'll only experience the low build quality when you touch the laptop. The appearance of this product conceals its flaws. The design looks nice because of an aluminum gloss layer.
If you buy the Lenovo laptop, you'll probably use it for basic tasks like typing reports or editing spreadsheets. The keys of the keyboard are quite flat and there is little 'travel'. This doesn't make typing optimal, so it's wise to connect an external keyboard to write your debut novel. Even after tweaking the settings, the touchpad is difficult to use and an external mouse is recommended for intensive use.
Average battery life
After watching about two Full HD movies on Netflix, you need to connect the laptop to the power grid with an AC adapter. With intensive use, the battery lasts about 4 to 5 hours. This means it will last during a lecture or a workgroup session, but it's wise to bring the charging cable with you if you have a longer day. The battery life is fine for a product within this price range.
Reasonable image quality
The image quality is good. The screen has a Full HD resolution, which is fine for this price range. You have a good image from all viewing angles and your fellow students or colleagues can easily write along with your notes. But the screen doesn't get very bright and the brightness settings are close to each other. This means it has little effect when you set the screen brighter or less bright. The colors are also a bit dull.
The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has enough connectors. It has an SD card reader and a 3.5mm connector for your headphones. The laptop also has 3 USB ports and an HDMI connector. This is enough to connect a mouse, keyboard, and an external monitor to the laptop.
- An IdeaPad S145 weighs no more than 1.85 kg, so you can easily take it with you to college or work.
- You can watch movies and series in 1080p resolution on the Full HD screen, which is twice as sharp as an HD screen.
- Thanks to the aluminum layer on the back of the screen and on the keyboard, the laptop doesn't look plastic.
- The keyboard is very flat, so it's not the best for typing longer reports.
