Expert review of the Samsung Gear S3 Classic
- Thanks to the navigating ring, you can easily scroll through the menu.
- The Gear S3 recognizes your sports activities and registers your training data automatically.
- You call and reply to messages via the smartwatch.
- The smartwatch is compatible with Android and iOS smartphones.
- The watch case is great on a (ladies) wrist.
- Due to Samsung's own operating system, Tizen OS, the amount of apps is still limited.
Out of the box
A round chic box was on my desk last week. Always exciting: what does he really look like and how does he feel about it? The Gear S3 meets all expectations in terms of appearance. The smartwatch comes with usb charger, manual and 2 watch straps: size S and L. Handy, because then you know for sure that the watch fits on your wrist. To use the Gear S3, couple the watch to your smartphone via the Gear S app.
Characteristic of Samsung smartwatches is the classic and round design. The Gear S3 also has this. The screen is clear and readable both inside and outside. In addition, the watch has 2 physical buttons. The bottom button takes you to the menu and with the top button you go back to the previous screen. The biggest plus point of the watch is the rotating navigation ring. Thanks to these features in combination with the touchscreen, you can navigate through the menu quickly and easily.
Samsung uses its own operating system: Tizen OS. On the one hand, this is an advantage because Tizen OS is fully aligned with the design. This makes the smooth running navigation ring on the watch case possible. The disadvantage of the operating system is that only Samsung uses it, making the offer of apps smaller compared to Android Wear or iOS. When you remove the Gear S3 from the box, there are already a number of apps pre-installed on the watch. You can download another via your smartphone.
Messages and calls
When I receive a message on my smartphone, I also see this on my Gear S3. To answer the message, I use a predefined answer or I type via the T9 keyboard or handwriting recognition. Thanks to the built-in loudspeaker and microphone, it is also possible to make calls via the smartwatch. People with whom I had a telephone conversation did not hear any difference between a call via my smartwatch or via my smartphone. On the other hand, I found the sound from the Gear S3 somewhat flat and hard to understand in a busy room.
With the Samsung health app S-health you keep track of all your activities. So you see how many steps you have taken in one day, what your heart rate is and how many stairs you have walked. Have you moved too little or have you been sitting still for too long? Then you get a message that you have to walk around for a while. Are you going to run, cycle or walk? Then the smartwatch automatically recognizes your activity. Thanks to the built-in GPS and speed sensor you can see your mileage, speed and route.
I can say that the Gear S3 is currently my favorite smartwatch. The watch is really an extension of your smartphone. In addition, thanks to the built-in heart rate, GPS and speed sensor and automatic activity recognition, the watch is just as good a sports watch. However, you have to take into account the thickness of the watch case. Certainly for a woman this can feel great, but perhaps that is a matter of getting used to. The Gear S3 is easy to use with the rotating ring, touch screen and physical buttons.
