Samsung Galaxy S9 vs Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

On 25 February 2018, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S9 and its larger twin brother, the S9 Plus. Apart from the Plus variant having a larger screen size, there's a couple more differences between the smartphones. Are you curious about which ones they are? In this article, I'll compare the flagships' looks, performance, and cameras.

Camera

These models are the first ever smartphones with a variable aperture. Is that special? Definitely. The variable aperture adjusts to any kind of light, meaning you'll always take bright photos. In addition, the S9 plus is the first smartphone from the S series with a dual camera. In other words: yet another scoop for Samsung.

The cameras

S9 camera

S9: single camera

The S9 has a single 12-megapixel camera. The camera contains a variable aperture that, depending on the brightness, switches between f/1.5 and f/2.4. This way, you'll take clear photos in low-light circumstances as well as brightly-lit ones. There's an 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front, which allows you to take clear selfies. Prefer to record videos? Your videos will be detailed, thanks to Full HD resolution. On top of that, both models allow you to take super slo-mo videos, which allow you to capture a movement's every detail.

S9 Plus: dual camera

The dual camera on the Plus version creates a depth-of-field effect, which is comparable to your eyes focusing. It blurs the background when taking a portrait photo, which gives your photos a professional appearance. Both cameras have 12 megapixels, which allows you to take very sharp photos. The selfie camera and video functions on the S9 Plus are the same as on the S9.

Looks and performance

Put the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus side by side, and you'll barely see any differences on the outside. Yet, the dimensions of the two devices are different: the S9 Plus is considerably larger than the S9. When you compare the inside of the smartphones, on the other hand, you'll notice they differ in RAM and battery capacity.

Screen and working memory

S9 screen

S9: practical 5.8-inch screen

The Galaxy S9 has a 5.8-inch Quad HD screen. Thanks to this screen quality, videos will look sharp when you watch them. The screen is extra large, because the edges bend into the casing. There's 4GB of RAM under the 'hood', which allows you to quickly switch between more heavy-duty apps like 3D games. The S9 has a powerful battery with 3,000mAh, which will keep you going for 8 hours when the device is fully charged.

S9 Plus screen

S9 Plus: enjoying videos optimally

The 6.2-inch screen on the S9 Plus is slightly larger than the S9's. Thanks to the extra space, you'll be watching movies and series even more comfortably. What else is different? With 6GB, the S9 Plus has more RAM, which allows you to run high-end apps simultaneously for longer without your phone getting slow. The S9 Plus has a 3,500mAh battery capacity, yet lasts the same amount of time as the S9. This is because of its larger RAM and screen.

Conclusion

Apart from the size, the S9 and the S9 Plus have the same design. Yet, the S9 Plus' dual camera allows you to take better photos, and it has more RAM. These 'extra' functions come at a cost, too. Are photos and videos important to you, but you don't take them daily? In that case, choose the S9. Do you take pictures every day and do you simply want the best-looking photos? Go for the S9 Plus.
