Are you going to hike and will you stay in a hostel or cottage during your holiday? That makes a difference. For a trip like, a hiking backpack of 40 to 50 liters has enough room. This allows you to walk for several weeks without camping gear. There's room for your clothes, drinks and toiletries. You can also use the backpack as a daypack at your destination.

2 to 3 weeks of hiking with a tent

Walking through the mountains and sleeping in nature. For hiking trips of a few weeks, a trekking backpack of 51 to 60 liters has enough room. That way, you can fit a tent, a sleeping bag, your clothes, and some food and drinks in there. Tip: look at backpacks with hydration systems, so you can stay well-hydrated while you walk.

If you're going hiking for a long time prefer to sleep in a hostel or a house, I recommend a backpack with a capacity of 51 to 60 liters. No camping gear means more space for your travel items, clothing, and toiletries. Useful if you're traveling to a colder country. A thick sweater or jacket easily fits.

A trip of several months doesn't mean going where you want to, it also means sleep where you want to. A backpack of 61 to 70 liters is a good choice in that case. Trekking backpacks have enough space for your camping gear, such as your tent and sleeping bag, clothing, and other travel items. Also need cookware? No problem.

A gap year. From Bangkok to Sydney, and perhaps to Bali. You'll probably stay in hostels. A backpack with a capacity of 61 to 70 liters will suit you in that case. These backpacks have enough space for your clothes, toiletries, and other travel items. And maybe a gift for your parents.

Are you going to camp in a far country? You'll need a large trekking backpack of 71 to 85 liters. You can put everything you need in it: your clothes, a tent, a sleeping bag and mat, your toiletries, and other travel items. Some backpacks also come with a travel pack: a smaller backpack you use on location.
