7 tips for using a pipe detector

Do you want to drill a hole in the wall, but do not know where the pipes are running? With a pipe finder you can see exactly where you can and can not drill. In this article I give you 7 tips on the use of a pipe finder.

Why use a pipe finder?

Especially when you as a professional or fanatic do-it-yourselfer regularly drill holes in walls, there is a risk of drilling through a pipe, power cable or wooden construction. Especially if you do not have a construction plan, drilling remains a gamble. Therefore, use a pipe finder to prevent damage, costs and hassle afterwards. Follow the following tips when using a pipe finder:

Tip 1

Metal jewelry affects the operation of the pipe finder, so the results are no longer correct. Always take off your watch and jewelry.

Tip 2

Use pipe finder

The pipe finder gets confused with static electricity on the wall. This static electricity is caused by the temperature and humidity of the room. In hot or humid rooms, this is therefore more common and the pipe finder incorrectly attacks. Fortunately, there is an easy solution: place your hand flat on the wall a few decimetres away from the detector. This is how you build up the static electricity and the detector works well again.

Tip 3

Make sure that no other electrical appliances are in the vicinity. These make the pipe finder less accurate. Metallic materials and aluminum-coated insulating materials also influence the precision of the pipe finder. So keep this in mind.

Tip 4

Use pipe finder

Have you detected an object in the wall? Then move the pipe finder at least 3 times along this point. This makes it even more precise to determine the location of the object in the wall. Move the pipe finder in a straight line with slight pressure over the surface without lifting it in between.

Tip 5

There is a maximum depth in which the pipe finder detects the material. Read in the manual how deep this detection is for your model and keep this in mind. The detection depth is also different for each detection mode. For example, the maximum detection depth in the concrete mode is deeper than in the dry construction mode.

Tip 6

In some circumstances, for example, if there is a lot of water or metal in the wall, live conductors are not detected properly. The depth in the wall of the conductor also plays a role in the power of the signal. Therefore, also consult other sources of information, such as building plans, to check where the cables run.

Tip 7

No matter how well you measure, you can always avoid missing a cable. Always turn off the power before you drill into walls. You do not want to risk running a live conductor.
