Gas prices in 2025: what can I do?
Why do we change the gas prices?
The gas prices remain unpredictable. Sometimes they increase, sometimes they decrease. These are the most important causes:
The supply: Europe stores gas as a winter supply, but it's running low. The Dutch storages are filled for 33%, which is below the EU norm of 39%. This causes uncertainty and higher prices.
Uncertainty in the United States: The United States is an important supplier since the Russian gas has fallen away. But impending import tariffs cause uncertainty about the supply. This uncertainty causes rising prices.
Unrest in the world: Conflicts and tensions in the Middle East or other major gas-producing countries create additional uncertainty. The international gas market reacts immediately. In the event of unrest or conflict, prices usually rise rapidly.
What do we expect in the near future?
No one can predict the future. 1 thing is sure: the gas prices remain higher than before the energy crisis. This is why:
Less supply: Russia once supplied a large part of the European gas. That gas supply is closed now. At that moment, the gas fields in Groningen and the North Sea closed. This means less gas is available and the prices increase.
Expensive gas: We get a lot of liquid gas (LNG) from the United States right now. That's via a ship, which is more expensive than via a pipeline. These ships also go to the highest bidder, which is often Asia. This means there's less security and higher prices.
Higher taxes: Europe wants less gas consumption. To realize this, mixing with Green Gas is required from 2026 and the right to emit greenhouse gases from 2027. This causes an expected price increase of about € 0.25 per cubic meter gas in the next few years.
How do you save on your gas bill?
An average household pays about € 200 per month on energy, of which € 140 on gas. Saving on gas means saving on your energy bill. These are the best ways:
(Hybrid) heat pump: Save up to 85% of your gas consumption with a hybrid heat pump, or even 100% with a fully electric model. Thanks to subsidies, you already have one from € 4119 at Coolblue Energy.
Smart thermostat: Don't have your heating turned on unnecessarily. With a smart thermostat and smart radiator knobs, you can save up to 20% on your gas costs.
Radiator fans: Spread heat faster and lower your thermostat without losing comfort.
Fixed energy contract: Fix your energy price and protect yourself from further increases.
