Advice on thermostats for floor heating

Which thermostat you need for your floor heating depends on what controls your floor heating. This can be district heating, but also a boiler or heat pump. In this article, we'll explain how you determine which heat source you have and which thermostat is most suitable for your floor heating.

Boiler

If your boiler controls the floor heating, you can connect a modulating or an on/off thermostat to the boiler. It might be the case that the brand of the smart thermostat isn't compatible to your boiler. Always check if the thermostat is suitable for your boiler by searching for the name of the boiler in the manual of the thermostat. That way, you're sure the thermostat works with your floor heating.

When you use district heating, you're not allowed to control your heat system yourself. Always discuss it with your energy provider before you install a new thermostat. With district heating, you can only choose an on/off thermostat. These work with the zone valve. In this case, you'll often control the temperature via a central thermostat.

District heating

Choose an on/off thermostat if you currently control your floor heating per room. You can connect it to the zone valve, also called the 2-way valve. When you have district heating and zone control, you'll see 2 temperature knobs with the pipes and a number of buttons for every room in the house. You don't replace any of them, you just replace the thermostats in the house with other on/off thermostats. You choose a wired thermostat when you had one before, and choose a wireless thermostat when you already use a wireless thermostat at the moment.

Floor heating and radiators

Do you have floor heating for one level, and radiators in a couple of rooms? You can connect smart radiator knobs to the radiators and use an accompanying smart thermostat for the floor heating. You can also control all radiators at the same time with a regular thermostat. Check if your current thermostat is wireless. If that's the case, you'll need a wireless smart thermostat.
