Hot topic.A heat pump is a smart investment. Your energy bill goes down, your house is ready for the future, and you receive a subsidy from the government. That way, you can keep the costs low and start saving from day 1.
An overview of the costs
All Weheat heat pumps are suitable for both hybrid and fully electric use. A fully electric heat pump is often more expensive, because it needs a boiler for warm water and the indoor unit is more extensive. That makes the installation a bit more expensive.
That does come with something great: you don't need a gas connection anymore. You don't have to worry about rising gas prices this way, and your house is ready for the future.
What do you get back?
A heat pump ensures you consume less gas. However, this does mean you'll be consuming a bit more energy. This is how we calculate your annual savings: (Saved gas x average gas price) - (extra energy x average energy rate)
- With a hybrid heat pump, you can save up to 85% on your gas consumption. This is an average of € 1000 annually.
- With a fully electric heat pump, you don't consume gas anymore and your savings will be even higher.
Energy label and house value
A heat pump almost always ensures a better energy label. How many steps you rise, depends on your house and the insulation. That's good for your energy bill and the value of your house. A higher energy label converts into a 3 to 5% house value increase on average.
A lot of mortgage companies also have an interest rate discount in case you improve your energy label. That way, you lower your energy costs and your monthly expenses.
- Hybrid heat pump: 1 to 2 label steps usually.
- Fully electric heat pump: 2 to 3 label steps usually, mostly good for insulated houses.

Frequently asked questions
What's the Warmtefonds?
The Nationaal Warmtefonds is a government program. The goal: making sustainability improvements affordable for everyone. You can loan money for insulation, solar panels, or a heat pump. Thanks to the low interest that can even go down to 0%, you can make sustainability improvement without having to invest much of your own money.
What are the terms and conditions for a loan from the Warmtefonds?
You can take out a loan if you're the owner of a privately-owned home or a CoE. You can loan between € 1000 and € 27,000, and you can request a higher amount as a CoE. You pay this back in 7 to 20 years via fixed monthly payments, You can use the loan for energy-saving measures such as insulation, solar panels, or a heat pump.
What does a heat pump really yield?
A heat pump lasts 15 years on average. During that time, you save on your energy costs every year and the value of your house often increases thanks to a better energy label. Some banks even offer an interest rate discount on sustainability improvements. If you add everything, you end up with a yield of 6 to 9% per year. That much more than you get on your savings account or most investments. The payback period is between 5 and 8 years on average.
When are you entitled to a subsidy?
To receive the subsidy, you have to meet a few requirements. The most important one: the heat pump is new, placed by an approved installer, and your house was built before 1 January 2019. You can also only request the subsidy after the installation. You can find the full list on the RVO website.
Are there extra subsidies I can request?
Some municipalities provide extra subsidies. What's possible differs per municipality. In some parts of Groningen and Drenthe, you can use the subsidy for value improvement, for example. Always check the Energy subsidy guide from Milieu Centraal for the current possibilities in your municipality.
