Is your house suitable for a heat pump?

Introduction

Want to save energy with a heat pump? It's important that your house is suitable for this. That way, you can get the most out of your investment. In this article, we'll tell you more about the guidelines for a heat pump.

Insulated house

Well insulated

A well-insulated house retains heat better, so a heat pump doesn't have to work as hard. Your central heating boiler also has to assist less often, so you save more on your energy bill.

Your house is well-insulated if the roof, walls, and floor have enough insulation materials to retain heat. Preferably, you have at least 12cm of insulation materials for your roof, such as mineral wool. Consider a cavity wall if you want to insulate your wall. For window insulation, you can consider double-pane windows or HR++ glass.

An airtight house helps you to reduce heat loss. The heat pump doesn't have to work as hard with these measures, which saves energy and costs.

Heating

Heating

A heat pump works best in combination with floor heating or radiators with a low heating temperature. Don't have this? Make sure to adjust your heating first. A heat pump also isn't compatible with district heating or convector heaters. Do you have a boiler that's older than 2014? Replace this first or choose a fully-electric heat pump. That way, you can lower your gas bill even more.

Solar panels

If you have solar panels, you can use the generated energy for your heat pump. That way, you earn back your heat pump faster. That's possible thanks to the net-metering regulation. This allows you to offset the energy you feed back to the grid to the energy you use in total. This way, you can offset the energy you generate during the spring and summer to the energy your heat pump needs in winter.

Do the 50°C test

A heat pump heats using a lower temperature than a central heating boiler. To know if your house is suitable for this, temporarily put the central heating boiler at 50°C. Do this when it's cold out or freezing. Also put your thermostat on continuous heating. If your home feeling nice and warm? That means you can easily heat your house with a heat pump.

Weheat guidelines

Coolblue Energy installs heat pumps from Weheat. We place these on a flat roof of at least 1.5 by 2m. We can also place them on a dormer or carport. The Weheat indoor unit is about the same size as an internet modem. This means you don't need a large empty room for the installation in your house.
