According to our camera lens expert
The Canon EF 40mm, together with the EF-S 18-135, is the first Canon lens that features the stepping motor focus system (STM). When using this lens with the EOS body with hybrid autofocus, you'll get a smooth and silent, but most of all consistent focus. For recording it's not unimportant that the light value is strong. The f/2.8 aperture lens therefore ensures that this full frame lens takes sharp shots, even in bad lighting conditions.

It is a small lens that you can easily take with you everywhere. Framing does require some footwork, but you gain a lot of sharpness with it. Focusing may be slightly slower than much more expensive USM lenses, but you can focus flawlessly while filming. Still in combination with my 70D. If I ever upgrade to a full-frame camera, this lens can go with me. Due to the speed of the lens (f2.8) you can very nicely separate your object to be photographed from the background. And all that for a reasonable price! A great lens for every canon owner and in my opinion a must have!

Ordered last night, received this afternoon! Some test photos taken on my EOS550D: focusing is a bit slower than with a USM lens, but very soft and precise. The photos are razor sharp from the largest opening f/2.8, the colors are very bright and the bokeh is buttery soft. Manual focusing is also problem-free. Very suitable for head+shoulder portraits of 1 person or couple; on full frame rather for small group or street photography.

The big advantage of this lens is of course its compact size. The lens is almost as small as the rear lens cap. This means it takes up less space and makes your camera easier to handle. This is also very useful for street photography, since you are less noticeable. The 40mm focal length is wide enough for general use, yet narrow enough to emphasize your subject. Especially on APS-C cameras, this seems to me to be a better option than the popular 50 mm f/1.8, I find the narrower field of view less useful for everyday use. For a lens of this size, the image quality is certainly impressive. The aperture of f/2.8 also makes this lens suitable for shooting in dark conditions. The autofocus system is also impressive. The STM system works relatively quietly, but could be a bit faster. The focus ring is a bit narrow in my opinion, but it turns smoothly, with just enough resistance to focus accurately.
The 40mm pancake has been my favorite prime lens for a while and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The angle of view is almost always ideal and the compact size means I can take it anywhere. I don't know how Canon could have achieved such a thing, but they succeeded.
