Pros and cons

According to our camcorder expert
  • Record with 4K in 4x sharper quality than 1,080p Full HD.
  • Despite the extensive specifications, the camcorder is compact.
  • Create beautiful bokeh even in low light with the large sensor.
  • The FDR-AX100 doesn't have External Line Return (XLR) connectors for professional sound.
  • Unfortunately, the camera doesn't have GPS for location data.
  • Filming in 4K requires a lot of storage, you'll need a SDXC card with a large storage capacity.

Description

The Sony FDR-AX100E is a compact 4K camcorder. The Exmor R-CMOS sensor is 4.9 times larger than with a normal camcorder. This makes the camera even more light-sensitive, which allows you to create beautiful bokeh even in low light. The new Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens has a wide-angle of 29mm and 12x optical zoom. At full zoom in, the optical image stabilization with active mode will prevent vibrations. With a minimum focusing distance of 1cm, you can also make sharp macro recordings. Adjust the camera manually with the conveniently placed buttons and the control ring around the lens. The LCD screen with touchscreen has an opening angle of 90 degrees and a rotation angle of 270 degrees. You can attach additional accessories to the Multi Interface Shoe. In addition, the camcorder has a connector for a microphone and headphones.

A "prosumer" camera. For real hobbyists videographers.

    Jonathan Heuschen | 15 October 2020

    • Pros:
      microphone in and headphones out
    • Pros:
      ND Filters
    • Pros:
Manual Controls - some semi-pro features
    • Pros:
      Image Quality - Zeiss lens
    • Pros:
      Stabilization
    • Con:
Some buttons placed in a counter-intuitive way
    • Con:
Touchscreen not as responsive as i would love to
    • Con:
Only useful in full HD despite the 4K

I was looking for a consumer camera with some pro-features, good stabilization and very good picture quality: this one fits the bill. Even if compact, the weight and built gives a premium feel. It's missing the top features of professional cameras but has some essentials: ND filters, full manual controls, excellent image quality, microphone and headphones connectivity... Stabilization is great for run and gun type of filming. Lot of features for autofocus and scene detection... Proprietary Multi-Interface hotshoe for use with wide range Sony accessories.
Best to use in full HD with external microphones. 4K tends to make the camera feel more flimsy.
Be sure to install the Sony's PlayMemories Home software to ensure stable USB connectivity when you need to transfer your files.
One of the best camera for aspiring filmmakers, serious YouTubers or even as a backup compact camera for professional video technicians.
