Have an Ethernet network of 4 Devolo 650's that functions excellently as far as I'm concerned, superior to WiFi. Still looking for WiFi connectivity because otherwise your mobile & tablet won't work again.....
Initially sought a solution with a Devolo 500 + WiFi but never got it working. Then "moved" to a Sitecom X8 that works in itself but has a moderate (2.4 Ghz.) to poor (5 Ghz.) performance despite the excellent specifications and the management software.
So again looking for a WiFi solution, this time the Devolo 1200 + WiFi. As usual with Devolo, the new unit quickly recognizes itself in the existing network, so 'so far, so good'. However, no matter what I tried, despite the fine WiFi signal, I was not assigned a valid IP address for Internet access.
Then the supplier called (routercenter.nl) but I didn't get much further. Then called the German Hotline. First an English speaking Spaniard, that didn't help either. Then some 'tweaked' and called again. Then a Dutch speaking Fleming got on the phone and the monkey quickly came up with the idea: the cable modem of my ISP (CAIW) is a Cisco EPC 3208 that has Internet modem functionality but no router functionality. As a result, no local IP address is assigned and the Devolo 1200 + WiFi has no option to assign a working IP address to it.
Solution: switch a router between the cable modem (in my case the Cisco EPC 3208) and the "main" unit of Devolo (in my case a Devolo 650 Triple Ethernet) and then "hang the Devolo 1200 + WiFi to the Devolo network " . Then, in no time at all, a well-functioning WiFi functionality was available that can be adapted to one's own wishes (guest network, etc.).
The rather sparsely designed Cisco EPC 3208 cable modem is used by many cable companies (including UPC) so the problems I experienced may be encountered by many other Devolo users. This is actually a shame because the advantages of Devolo are impressive in themselves: through Ethernet the throughput is > 200 Mbit/s, via WiFi > 100 Mbit/s and I don't think many solutions get around to that in practice .... (I at least not the ones I've tried, such as Sitecom X8 and Engenius ECB350). So buy an otherwise "bare" router with such a "bare" cable modem, then connect a network of well-functioning Devolo's to it and then the Devolo 1200 + WiFi is an excellent addition, but perhaps also a basic one!
