According to our lawn mower expert
Some lawn mowers just leave little to be desired. The McCulloch M53-160AWRPX is one of them. This 2.9kW gasoline mower has a 187cm³ Honda engine, leaving no doubts about the power below the hood. You can vary the speed of this self-driving gasoline lawn mover. Thanks to a 53-centimeter cutting width, and a cutting height that's adjustable in 6 steps, you'll be working at lightning speed. The choice between mulching or catching the grass is up to you, because both a mulching plug and a 60-liter container bag are included. The M53-160AWRPX also boasts ergonomic, adjustable grips, which makes it a very manageable lawn mower.
Note: this lawn mower uses Euro 95 or Euro 98 gasoline. It's not suitable for E10 gasoline.

I was looking for a good lawn mower 'like a Honda' but better priced, and I think I found it. A very good machine for me, I live in Wallonia with a garden of about 1500m² and adjacent forest, so you can expect that there are all kinds of branches and thick weeds on the edge of the garden. This machine has no problems at all!
What was in the box:
After unpacking, all you have to do is 1. assemble the grass bag (push rubber of cloth grass bag into groove of hardtop lid) 2. assemble the operating handle, but this is no problem for the do-it-yourselfer and 3. oil and petrol in do the machine. Attention: Honda lists 10W30 as oil, but I couldn't find it anywhere! 10W40 for sale everywhere but no 10W30. Briefly explained: first number = thickness at cold temp, 2nd number = thickness at operating temp. So the second number is definitely important! Lower is always allowed since oil is thinner at the same temperature, but that is always better! So I took (more expensive) 5W30 when only it was available as an alternative, but in fact that is already oil for modern car engines, a bit overkill so it can't hurt (oil is thinner when it is very cold, but that is certainly no objection, on the contrary ).
Carefully pull the starter cable a bit after you have put in oil so that it can distribute itself between the engine parts and the engine is therefore immediately lubricated on first start.
The lawnmower started when first turned on and runs fine. I have often worked with the 5.5 hp engine, and this is rather a 4 hp but I feel very little difference. You should know that this was the first time I went to drive off the grass in my yard, and I've moved into this house since April 1. Before this, the garden had not yet been mowed this year, and with the weather of the last few weeks my garden was turning into a 'jungle', in places the grass was about 0.4m high with thick weeds, so a tough task . You may have guessed it, but the lawnmower has made its way through it, without a doubt. I didn't get to the speed controller because I think the slow speed is more than fast enough, and I don't want to burden the mechanics unnecessarily, that's just the way I am. Likewise, I will never continue to accelerate when I move the machine into a bend, because it pinches the rear wheels too much due to the lack of differential, and I always give the machine a push before the clutch engages, but everyone does what he wants .
Since the grass was so high, the grass bag was regularly full. The cutting is very easy for me, because the mouth of the grass bag is smaller than the opening of the (woven polypropylene) waste bags I use. So I partly put the grass bag in the waste bag and cover it like that. Ideal and grass bag is sturdy enough for such work (no limp rag). So it's not too big either, and that can be considered a disadvantage, but for Jan in the cap it can fit more than enough, and I bet it will be a lot easier on my next mowing because the grass will be much shorter stand now.
This is also the only time I've heard the engine 'stall' (shock and slow down): when the grass bag was full and the opening became clogged. You can hear this very clearly. While mowing, you can easily check whether the grass bag is full by pulling up the protective flap and seeing how much grass is already at the end. After a few times I was able to guess when the collection bag was full before the engine started sputtering.
With my parents I used to drive off the grass with a Honda petrol mower, and what strikes me now is the safety: it has become impossible to run the engine when removing the grass bag, which used to be perfectly possible! Now it seems logical to me, but that difference stands out to me in any case: it is impossible to leave the lawnmower running for a while if you are not behind it, to remove a branch or the like, for example. You always have to push a lever to keep the engine and blade going. If you are very handy and agile, it is eventually possible to remove a branch just in front of or around the machine, on the other hand it gives the machine the chance to demonstrate the nice start of the 160GCV: that's a nice motorbike. Approach is very quick!
Unfortunately, I can't say much about durability yet, that will mainly determine my final opinion. The machine itself and what's included look decent, but I'm not going to make any further statements: time will tell. The manual is very nicely and clearly laid out, and you also get the original Honda engine manual.
Result more than satisfactory so, for this price this seems like a really good mower with Honda engine, just what I was looking for! Machine just looks nice too, doesn't it? Finally, for you who wouldn't know: McCulloch = American but has been a daughter brand of 'Husqvarna' for years now.

Herrie agrees. The fuel tap is open by default, so you turn it close at the first start, which caused the necessary confusion ;)
