According to our lens filter expert
With Hama's variable neutral density filters, you can take photographs with a longer shutter speed. The filter blocks light between 1 and 8 stops. This is also possible if you've already reached the camera's longest shutter speed. Because the neutral density filter allows less light to pass through the lens, you can choose a longer shutter speed to capture things like the movement of a waterfall. By turning the front ring, you determine the amount of light that the filter allows through. Use the filter at the darkest setting to open a scene during recording, and then turn it to a lighter degree to bring your subject slowly into view.

I've had the filter for about 5 days now and tested it extensively. Overall, it's a great filter. Especially for the price. But if you want to get the most out of it, it's better to go for a more expensive ND filter. Or not even a variable. I will briefly explain why.
A variable nd filter is basically 2 polarization filters that you turn separately. And a polarizing filter removes the reflections. That in itself is not a problem. But it does produce different results than you might want.
The 2nd issue I ran into is that if you turn this filter to MAX it gets strange vignette effects, or odd dark spots. Apparently this is an issue with many variable ND filters. You can find quite a lot about it on google.
In short, if you are looking for a filter to experiment with and occasionally take along with you when shooting, then it is a great purchase. But are you looking for the best quality and do you want to be able to leave the shutter open as much as possible? Then I would consider a more expensive variant or perhaps no variable filter.
