According to our camera lens expert
The Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art is a light-sensitive f/1.8 portrait lens for Canon SLR cameras. With a crop factor, a zoom of 50-100mm provides a range similar to 75-150mm on a full-frame camera. The lens has a fixed aperture of f/1.8. This doesn't just make the lens suitable for portrait photography, but also for optimal performance in low-light situations. Are you planning on recording? The controls of the zoom and focus ring are aligned, so the lens doesn't slide out.

This lens is for me the replacement of 2 primes (Canon EF 50 1.4 and 85 1.8). It is at least as sharp and bright and gives me much more flexibility through the zoom. I've shot a few portraits with it and they're as good as the 85 (and better than the 50).
Lens feels very solid and is perfectly finished, best I've personally seen from Sigma so far. Similar to the Canon L lenses I have. The zoom ring is a bit on the stiff side, but everything runs smoothly.
So I am very happy with it!
Only downside: The lens is heavy. It is still doable for me, but I can imagine that it is too much for others. The same goes for size. By comparison, it's as long and heavy as my 100-400L at 100mm.

I use the lens to film with. That can only be done from a tripod because there is no image stabilization, but I can live with that limitation. Used like this, it's the perfect portrait lens. And it matches well with the 18-35 mm 1.8 from Sigma. I'm very happy with it.
