According to our NAS expert
The Synology DS418 is a professional NAS, suitable for use in home offices or medium-sized businesses. 4 slots allow you to install up to 4 drives to store your company data. The Quad-Core processor is so powerful that you can stream 4K images directly and make backups of multiple files and folders. The NAS uses link aggregation for this through 2 network ports. This way, your device has a double transfer speed of 226Mb/s. Have you modified your files, and you're not happy with the result? Synology software stores multiple versions of your files, so you can always undo your changes. Expand the functions or your NAS with a monitoring program for IP cameras or virtual machines from the extensive app store.

This was my first NAS, I didn't know what a basic model was for a decent NAS. I was looking for a model that required it to be flexible for any expansion and relatively future proof. For this reason I opted for a recent model with 4 bays (hard drive locks). With these wishes I came up with this product and below I give my own experience with this product and explain why I have named the pluses and minuses.
For starters, it's fairly easy to manage and you can choose from dozens of software packages from synology, each offering a cool feature. I have now enabled a number of features and because of the software on it almost everything is "click" "done", making it very easy to manage.
In the beginning you probably can't see the forest for the trees, but after some research you will come out of this.
The hardware of this model is certainly sufficient for home use. The synology also goes into a kind of sleep mode when not in use, so that it consumes little energy.
One point about this product that I probably won't be using, but which is a very positive feature, is the possibility of LACP. With LACP you can "bundle" the two Ethernet ports of the NAS, making two ports as one. This would "effectively" give you twice the bandwidth and redundancy (everything keeps running) in case one of the two ports or cables breaks. This is a nice feature, but to use it I would have to ask more than 1 Gbps. This is of course not feasible for a single PC or laptop on the WiFi, and it is also not so necessary for availability. As a techie I think this is great, but if I'm realistic I don't need this for home use.
Because of the price of the hard drives, I first bought two drives with 2TB. Then I have the redundancy in case one of the disks breaks and the (minimum) storage capacity for all my photos, music and backups. But because this NAS has 4 bays (locks for hard drives), I can always add two more drives later without having to replace the old one.
In summary, I certainly do not regret my purchase. It was a pricey model, but personally I think this is just like buying a laptop or PC. "I'd rather be a little more expensive and flexible for future expansions than a little cheaper and look for a new one next year."
I am satisfied with this model and I hope to have helped you (the reader) a bit in making a choice.

Bought to replace a ds214+ Together with two new disks (wd red 10 TB)
Never regretted the ds214+. The NAS runs stable and the OS is actually the best you can get. That is also the reason that you can find a stripped-down version for a DIY NAS.
Of course, realize that your disks take a big bite out of your budget. But synology also has a handy raid calculator for this. I also highly recommend shr. (synology hybrid raid)
Installation was very easy as expected. Old nas updated to latest dsm version. Disks moved, in the same order, to the new NAS. At startup, unlike the guides, it still had all the settings (besides the files, of course). Once booted, insert the extra disks.
The only downside was adding new disks. This usually took quite a while until I looked up some settings for this. It still took a while before everything was ready (2 days)
Definitely recommended to at least buy a budget UPC. This is possible from 70-90 euros. Here is now an apc g 700.

I bought my DS418 to replace two ten year old "Nassen". Yes man, what a revelation! Phenomenally high speed hassle-free up to 800Mb/s, not to mention the amount of software you can install. You can keep it simple, but you can also turn it into a real mini data center for your home and on the road. The software is updated automatically, everything fits seamlessly with smart TVs, apps for Android, Mac, Windows ... You might suggest that it is an expensive device, but I have to contradict that right away: The software and the regular updates you receive is also part of the price paid and then suddenly it really doesn't seem like much anymore. Just look around you at what software costs. I am already very happy to have this device in my possession and don't want another one!
