Purchased less than a year ago, this NAS runs in a data center. As an entrepreneur, I have set up this NAS with a number of (free) packages that Synology offers, with the intention of eliminating the dependence on Cloud services and getting the management of critical business units in-house. Among other things, this NAS runs: MailPlus (mail server with multiple domains and email addresses: very good package, with good admin console & webmail). Calendar: Calendar function (synced with Android) File Station: Storage of all business files with RAID1 data protection. Web station: Hosting of multiple business websites, all with their own domain name. RADIUS server: authentication of VPN users via external firewall.
Server runs 24/7, and very satisfied with the aforementioned packages. The installation and fine-tuning of the NAS does take some time, but it is still doable for less skilled people. Also, the backup function (HyperBackup) works well to back up from/to another NAS. Some customers also have access to this NAS where access rights can be set very well and through logs it is clear what is happening on the system.
Cons: Unfortunately, the CPU is not strong enough to host a virtual Windows 7 or Windows 10. It works, but not very smoothly. For this I placed 16 GB of RAM memory. The VPN package is also not sufficient. For this I use a separate FortiGate firewall (where authentication is done with the login details of the Synology).
Synology regularly updates the operating system (every 2 - 3 months), unfortunately usually after such an update the NAS has to undergo a reboot. However, these updates can be scheduled / deferred.
