According to our bike navigation expert
The Garmin Edge 520 Plus is the new brother of the Edge 520 bike computer. With the Plus you can easily navigate through Europe, thanks to the integrated Garmin bike map with directions for challenging cycling routes. During cycling, the bike computer shows your real-time results directly on the screen. The system measures your VO2 max and gives advice about your recovery time. You can stay connected with other cyclists and track their results as well. As with the Edge 520, the Plus tells you exactly what your pedaling frequency is, how fast you are cycling, and at what altitude you are riding. You can also easily connect the included sensors to your bike computer via the ANT+ or Bluetooth Smart. Connect your smartphone to the Plus and receive messages and calls on your bike computer.
Note: with the Edge 520 Plus you can only navigate based on a preloaded route. As soon as you deviate from this route, the bike navigation won't be able to calculate a new route to your final destination.Screen size | 2,3 inches | |

After I had already made a few rides with the Wahoo ELEMNT, Garmin launched this Edge 520 Plus. Since this device can recalculate your route during the ride, I exchanged my Wahoo at Coolblue just in time and ordered this Garmin. I usually create my own mountain bike routes with Komoot (recommended!), and sometimes you drive wrong in unfamiliar territory. The Wahoo couldn't recalculate my route, this Garmin does. And that in turn gives me more effective driving time while I'm away, ideal!
In general, the Garmin Edge series is often referred to as a product that has a lot of possibilities, but is therefore not always user-friendly. This is why I first opted for the Wahoo. Although Wahoo also offers an excellent product, I still think this Garmin is slightly better in terms of navigation. In addition, Garmin can also create Surprise-Me routes via Garmin Connect (Create Course > "tour") and use a large, anonymous database of roads popular with Garmin users ("Trendline Popularity Routing"). In addition, the Garmin contains more targeted training tools (although Wahoo is also working on this) and more options.
One of these options is GroupTrack, which allows you to see cyclists with a compatible Garmin appear on your map. (see photo 1) I find this very useful for, for example, tours or other rides where someone sometimes stays behind. Messages also appear on your device, so you know quickly and safely that your bike buddy is on the back because of a flat tire... or that dinner is ready. In addition, LiveTrack is also useful, so that the home front knows where you are already, and how you have already driven. Good to know: Wahoo also offers LiveTrack, just like a kind of GroupTrack. Only not that many people have a Wahoo. Garmin is simply the 'standard' in the bicycle industry. A nice advantage here is that their Garmin's mounts are often integrated. For example, I ride a Scott Scale, which has a Garmin mount integrated into the stem (see photo 2).
You can also personalize the Garmin more. For example, I now have a Connect IQ app data field that graphically shows which gear I'm in. (see photo 3) This is obviously not as accurate as with electronic shifting, but still gives a good indication and it's just a nice idea (search Connect IQ apps for "Gears" from "TomMini"). I've also set the Garmin to show my name, phone number and email address when it starts up in case it ever gets lost. You never know, right? Is the Garmin less user-friendly than the Wahoo? Yes, I do. Once you learn to work with the Garmin Connect ecosystem, it's not that bad, although I have to admit that I'm a techie myself. Is he worth his price? It's a hefty amount, but it will help you train more effectively, discover new paths more easily, and waste less time trying to find the way. In my opinion, a GPS device is the best upgrade you can do to your bike.

Works very well! You have to sit down for a while to adjust your screens to your liking, but that is always with Garmin, also with my Forerunner! Oh and if you're going to do that, turn off the sound :P!!

Solid device, simple operation, although operation via touchscreen would have been even more user-friendly. Trusted Garmin quality.
