I have this cam sitting outside, facing a parking lot where my property is. Image with IR lights is fine for an underexposed garden, but if there is street lighting then the image is even BETTER without IR, because then you have good colors, which can be useful if recordings have to be used for tracking. (It's funny, because YouTube reviews almost always show night shots with IR images, rarely night shots without IR.) If you're using IR, these LEDs are visible at night - inconvenient if you don't want the cam to stands out - but I have them turned off, because, as said, the image is better if there is sufficient (street) lighting.

Installing a microSD is a bit tricky - apparently they'd rather you use their paid 'cloud service' - but at least on the latest ones they don't have the screws on the front covered with a warranty sticker. Opening it therefore no longer has any consequences for your warranty. You have to open it, but the manual does tell you where the microSD slot is.

Although it may not be clear at first, you can point the cam in all directions: there are 3 screws, the cam tilts 90 degrees, and rotates 360 degrees on both the base and the cam itself. It would have been easier if Foscam had used a ball head on the foot like on their older cams.

As usual with Foscam outdoor cams, the cable truss is really (too) large: I had to drill a large hole in my frame to get it through.

To set up the camera and view live you can use IE or Chrome with the Foscam plug-in, however the playback function currently only works with IE. The Foscam Android app asks too many permissions and doesn't work on a tablet, so I use "tinycam monitor PRO" - it's very good. The cam also has a built-in FTP server, so the microSD can also be read with an FTP client (port 50021). In addition, I use OpenVPN to view/operate my cam when I am not at home. It often takes me 3 attempts to get the browser plug-in to connect to the cam (which is connected to the network with WiFi), but the Android app tinycam monitor PRO connects almost immediately every time.

I make a continuous (24/7) HD video recording. The cam always writes 256MB video files to the microSD, and when the card is almost full, it always deletes the oldest files. With 1080p 1Mbs 21fps I get about 30 minutes per 256MB file, or more than 2 days on my 32GB microSD. If you want to save longer, I would choose either a slightly lower quality video (eg 720p) or a 64GB microSD (or possibly upload it to an FTP server).
