I have had this lens for half a year now as a replacement for a Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM that came back from repair with a lot of optical deterioration. I needed a good wide-angle zoom and it seemed unwise to spend a lot on a GM lens again, but I had already had the Sony Zeiss 16-35mm and I find it inferior, so I ended up with this one. I had already seen tests, so I knew that the lens would be optically excellent – at 16mm already from f/4. That was confirmed. In terms of sharpness, it is a top lens and there are no real weak points – in the corners and at 35mm it is also good. I was pleasantly surprised that 'zoom by wire' is a non-issue. I actually do not notice the difference with a normal zoom mechanism, perhaps because I have also been used to 'focus by wire' for a long time. The fact that the zoom position is not displayed on the lens but in the viewfinder or on the display when you zoom has its pros and cons. Personally, I find it very useful that this information is now available via the viewfinder/display, but it does take some getting used to. And although you can no longer see what the zoom position is on the lens, thanks to the aperture ring you can see the aperture position. On the wide side, this lens gives very reasonable 'sun stars', actually already from f/8 (and at f/5.6 they are also visible to some extent). However, fully zoomed in I don't find them that beautiful. And although you don't buy a wide-angle zoom of f/4 for bokeh, this lens can give a very nice bokeh if you are close to your subject.
