Advice on external SSDs
Build and size
In terms of build and size, an external SSD has a number of major advantages over 'regular' external hard drives (or HDDs). An SSD is very light and compact, making it easy to carry, even in your pocket. In addition, an SSD doesn't consist of moving parts, but the data is stored on a chip. As a result, an external SSD is shockproof, has a long lifespan, and is much more silent than an external HDD.
The storage capacity
To determine how much storage capacity your external SSD must have, it's important to know how many files will fit on it. Choose a large storage space of 1 or 2TB if you want to store a huge movie or music collection or multiple backups, for example. If you only store photos or one backup of your computer, a lower storage space will suffice, such as 256GB or 500GB. The maximum storage of an external SSD is 2TB (2000 GB) for now.
How many files can I save?
- 250 or 256GB: 25 2-hour Full HD movies or 2500 music albums or 25,000 photos.
- 500 or 512GB: 50 2-hour Full HD movies or 5000 music albums or 50,000 photos.
- 1TB or 1024GB: 100 2-hour Full HD movies or 10,000 music albums or 100,000 photos.
- 2TB or 1920GB: 200 2-hour Full HD movies or 20,000 music albums or 200,000 photos.
The speed of an external SSD
The speed of an external SSD determines the read and write speed. The read speed indicates how quickly you open and view data from the SSD. The write speed determines how fast you actually transfer files to or from the SSD. Many SSDs have a read and write speed of around 400MB per second, which means that you can open or transfer a 10GB movie in about 25 seconds. The higher the read or write speed, the faster the external SSD.
Most external SSDs today have a USB-C connector. The USB-C models often come with a cable that has both an 'A' and a 'C' side, so you can also use it with older laptops and PCs with a USB-C port. The USB version is also important, since USB 3.1 can be up to 2 times faster than USB 3.0. The correct cable is important, but it's often included by default.
