According to our earbuds expert
With the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC33iS, you can listen to your favorite music. Thanks to active noise canceling, disturbing ambient noise and noise are slightly damped. When you have an incoming call, you accept it via the remote control in the cable. Next, you can call hands-free with the built-in microphone. Don't want to use the earbuds for a while? If so, you can safely store them in the supplied pouch.

Because I like to listen to music and we fly a few times a year, I recently delved into noise canceling. I always thought that was very expensive, but after a few evenings on the internet it turned out to be not that bad. In the end I chose these in-ears from Audio-Technica because of the low price and the good reviews. By the way: I am not an audiophile and always use in-ears, usually a set of Philips for 40 euros.
After ordering at Coolblue, the product was delivered quickly as always. The box contains everything you need: 3 pairs of rubber caps, 1 pair of foam tips, an AAA battery (which the NC should last for 60 hours) and a bag where you can put everything in it. I would have preferred a battery, but then you end up with the K391NC from AKG, which is 100 euros more expensive. The earbuds and the NC unit are very light and have a confidence-inspiring feel. I have that feeling less with the cables, but time will show whether they are indeed less robust.
Based on the reviews, I immediately put the foam tips on the earplugs. These close your ears well by filling them completely. That feels a bit strange, but that already gives you a bit of passive cancellation. That wasn't much for me. The active canceling does provide a significant reduction in ambient noise. I tested them while vacuuming and it's about half the difference. There are headphones with NC that do that better, but you also pay for that. You won't hear an annoying high-pitched tone when you turn on the NC without music. It is true that you get through cable noises quite well, perhaps because it is otherwise so quiet.
If you turn on music with the NC on, you hear even less sounds in the environment. The sound is slightly amplified. For my taste there is a little too much low, but mid and high are still well reproduced. Without NC (and so for example when the battery is empty) the sound sounds flatter and there is less bass. Kind of like I used to on my hi-fi set with the Surround button (which was supposed to mimic something like 5.1 or something). For me reason to always have the NC on.
The in-line remote also works fine, I tested that with both iOS and Android.
Conclusion: I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with this on the plane. I don't know if I'll continue to use them outside of that, but so far I'm very satisfied. The price/quality ratio is very good and the set also feels sturdy enough to enjoy it for years. I just think that I have to replace the foam tips in the meantime, a good extension for the Coolblue range!

First the sound: The Audio-Technica headphones deliver a beautiful sound; all tones are of course represented and even after a while not a certain pitch stands out. The noise canceling works excellent, especially when you realize that they are in-ears and not, for example, over-ears. Of course you shouldn't expect miracles, but compared to my Bose over-ear headphones that also have noise canceling, they perform surprisingly well.
Service: The fact that you can adjust the sound as well as stop/start/choose the next songs by means of the button on the cord and the unit that takes care of the noise canceling is very nice. Many other noise canceling earbuds miss one of the two options. Incidentally, the unit for the noise canceling is quite heavy when the battery is in it. Fortunately, you can clamp it with the clip, but if you don't do that for a while, you will feel the unit pulling on the earplugs.
Fit: In the meantime I have worn many different earplugs and headphones and while some are fine on their own, most have the problem that they start to hurt my ears over time and/or that the tips fall out easily. With the Audio Technica, I was delighted to find that a comfortable fit doesn't have to come at the expense of staying in your ear. They sit firmly in my ears and do not hurt even after listening to a piece of music for a long time.
Main flaw: When you have the earplugs in and you are on the bike, you can clearly hear wind noise. This can drown out the music even in a strong gust of wind. You also hear the sound of the cables when they move against each other or against your clothing. I'm quite sensitive to such noises, but remarkably enough, after a while I don't have that much trouble anymore.

After a day it is already clear! These are the earplugs I was looking for! Especially the fact that I am often on the phone on the phone, and I have a mild hearing problem, ensure that ambient noise is often very disturbing, which results in the fact that you speak louder yourself. None of this with this set of earbuds! I also immediately placed the foam rubber caps, which improved the wearing comfort. These also connect better to the ears, so ambient noise is better attenuated. Then you turn the switch.... And nasty background noises are kept to a minimum. Of course, if you're skeptical about the price, and the glowing reviews, you'll only half believe it... Until you experience it for yourself. Of course, over-ear headphones are even better. But this is truly a revelation. Until now I have not noticed that moving the cords is 'annoying'. Maybe this is because of my hearing impairment? (work related)
The packaging is neatly arranged, and the manual is clear. If you follow the manual, nothing can go wrong. Cable is of good length and the clip on the noise canceling unit is of good length. In short, Value for Money!
