According to our Bluetooth speaker expert
The UE MEGABOOM by Ultimate Ears is the big brother of the well-known Ultimate Ears BOOM. Simply stream your music to the speaker via Bluetooth and enjoy a balanced sound with a deep bass. Thanks to the placement of the powerful internal speakers, the music plays in all directions. Do you like to party in stereo? Connect a second BOOM or MEGABOOM via Bluetooth and play stereo sound. Enjoy your beach or pool party with peace of mind, as the Bluetooth speaker is shock and water-resistant. With this speaker, you can enjoy music for 20 hours.

I initially chose this speaker because I wanted a speaker that had a bit more sound than most mid-range speakers, my first experience with the UE brand was not very positive, when I bought their UE boom I was disappointed in everything the speaker had to offer. but with this speaker it's just the complete opposite, I don't know how they did it but this thing is top notch. I personally think the best thing about the speaker is that the possibilities with the app are endless. You can switch the speaker on and off remotely, you can set your speaker completely to your own taste in the menu and so the product also feels very personal. the battery is great, it charges quickly and lasts a long time. the IPX7 rating on this speaker is also very nice, I am not at all afraid of exposing this speaker to water or submerging it. That is very important to me when it comes to waterproofing. I do have something to say about this speaker, they are certainly not deal breakers, but still. the biggest problem with this speaker i think the sound is a bit fake especially the basses, you can hear them but they are not really there its hard to describe. I also understand that with a speaker of this size and in this price range you should not complain too much, but other speakers from approximately the same price range do not have that, for example: the jbl xtreme or fugoo xl. it is certainly better than speakers from lower price ranges, but I still find it noticeable. also at higher volume it sometimes distorts, especially with songs with a lot of low frequencies, I personally think that this is a connection between the driver size and the amount of wattage that the drivers have available. but at lower volumes it is certainly not a problem. the sound is certainly not bad and it is nice to hear but if you want to buy a speaker purely for the sound I would buy one of the aforementioned. Another thing to note is the build quality. out of the box the speaker feels premium and very well built, this is true but after about half a year of use the fabric on the speaker starts to get a bit loose, when the speaker is dry it doesn't matter much but if it is wet sounds like he is upset so that is sometimes disturbing. these are not very big problems, but still. my conclusion after using this speaker for half a year is that it is the best speaker if you are going for ease of use, this is due to the app and the simplicity of the design. if you are planning to buy this speaker I will definitely do it, I did it at the time and have not regretted it for a moment. if it is possible I will listen to it first and check out the app, I also recommend buying it if you are in doubt between this one or the UE BOOM 2 or the UE ROLL because the sound on this is just much better and more spacious than the other 2.

Home cinema sets, soundbars, stereo sets, speaker sets, headphones, earplugs, simply. Ways to listen to audio. We are busy with it in 2015. We would like to have a speaker that produces beautiful and clear sounds, a speaker that looks nice, a speaker that also has a hip image in addition to a professional appearance, and a speaker that is just a bit hard (because, let's be honest. That's the first question your friends will ask).
In short, you want to be in possession of the very best speaker that is not too heavy, compact, looks nice and sounds good to your ears. Difficult, difficult. But last week I came into contact with the Megaboom of the Ultimate Ears brand, and as it looks now I have found my perfect speakers. I will try to convince you of the powers of this compact beast.
Briefly. Ultimate Ears has been a producer of high-quality audio solutions for almost 20 years. Many artists and bands all over the world use their products (Van Halen uses the in-ear monitors that Ultimate Ears produces), so it is not an unknown player on the market.
Let me just be honest, I was previously unfamiliar with this brand. I've heard the name mentioned, but never thought about it because I was never looking for new audiovisual products at the time. We are now fast approaching summer. Nice weather, diving in the pool and long days / nights. And what could be more fun than having a nice summer song on by that pool?
I think I kind of made my point there. You are looking for a speaker that is solid, and if it is still possible, hip and powerful. And then you quickly come to the products of Ultimate Ears.
Just a few small points before I briefly discuss some features: – The speaker offers 360 degree sound, this is because the speaker has the shape of a cylinder. Approximately 85% of the cylinder is visibly covered with speaker grills. – The UE Megaboom can be linked to other Ultimate Ears products to produce Stereo or double sound, this is done via the app. – The UE Megaboom is available in different color combinations. – The UE Megaboom is IPX7-rated waterproof (so yes, it could possibly fall into the pool). – The UE Megaboom has a range of more than 30 meters via bluetooth. – The UE Megaboom comes with a powerful (rechargeable) battery that lasts for 20 hours.
There are probably still some points I'm forgetting, but here's my experience in short:
Design: I have the Megaboom in the black/blue color combination. Personally, I think the design is very nice and minimalistic. The product feels robust due to the plasma coating. I also find it useful that the flaps can be closed with rubber (waterproof). Behind these covers are a charging port (for the included micro-usb cable) and a 3.5mm jack to connect the Megaboom to your phone, laptop or TV, for example.
Furthermore, the device only contains 4 buttons. The on/off button, the button with which you search for new Bluetooth devices and the volume control. In short, I am very pleased with this minimalistic approach to the speaker.
Sound: The most important thing about the speaker is of course the sound. First let me say that the sound is great for a compact device. The sound is very loud even at 1/4th of the volume. The bass is in nice contrast with the tones of the music. Furthermore, I find it a huge advantage that the volume control can be controlled via your phone, but also that the app gives the possibility to choose preset profiles (e.g. more bass, better emphasis on vocal etc.), but also the possibility to create your own profile. After some playing you come very close to the perfect listening experience. Operating the app is very simple and the sound of the Megaboom is nothing short of brilliant (and that's no exaggeration).
Other: Finally, I am very pleased with the fact that the speaker has a long battery life. I've only recently owned the device, but it definitely ticks up the 20 hours of playback time. Of course the battery will wear out over the months, but luckily Ultimate Ears (unlike many competitors) offers a 2-year warranty on their battery, and not just on the product itself. I would also like to say that connecting via bluetooth is a piece of cake and takes less than a minute. The app gives clear instructions if it really doesn't work. It is also possible to adjust the notification language of the speaker or to update the speaker software via Bluetooth. It is also possible from the app to connect another Ultimate Ears product (as mentioned earlier) for Stereo or double sound.
The app also offers an option to use the Megaboom as an alarm clock. It is also possible to play music from every conceivable music source. Your local phone, Spotify, Pandora, Soundcloud and, if necessary, YouTube.
Conclusion: The Ultimate Ears Megaboom offers a surprising amount of sound for a compact device. The bass is powerful and the appearance of the device is hip. It is also a huge advantage that the speaker can take a beating and that it is waterproof. It is also a plus that the app is well developed. Furthermore, the functionalities are fine and the battery life is a relief. I can recommend this device to anyone looking for a decent speaker without too much fuss.

The MEGABOOM immediately stands out due to the cylindrical design with the woven nylon exterior. The speaker is not a boring cube like many of its competitors. At the front of the speaker is a thick strip of rubber that, when you pick it up, immediately gives the feeling that it can take a beating. On the rubber strip there is a very large + and - button for the volume. At the top you will find the on/off button and the Bluetooth connection button. At the bottom there is; A 3.5mm jack connection to play wired music; A micro-USB connector to charge the speaker. There is also a handy ring that can be used to hang the speaker. The sound of the speaker is impressive for its size. The volume is more than loud enough to provide a decent sized room with music. But a Bluetooth speaker is not made to be alone indoors, and this one certainly isn't. The speaker is not only solidly built, but is also water resistant! Ideal to use during a picnic, on the beach or in the shower. Ultimate Ears claims a battery life of no less than 20 hours. I have not played music non-stop for 20 hours and the volume has not been constant during use, so whether it will reach the 20 hours I have not been able to confirm. I can say that I only had to fully charge the speaker 2 times in a week, so if you go out for a day, you don't have to worry that your battery will run out halfway through the day. User-friendliness of a product is becoming more important by the day. The large volume buttons and its simple design ensure a pleasant user experience. Where this simplistic design does fail is the fact that the full power of the speaker is not used without any further knowledge or the accompanying smartphone app. An example of this is the battery percentage. It's not obvious that it will be spoken when both volume buttons are pressed at the same time, a clever solution that some users may never discover and use. When connecting to the speaker, the corresponding app is offered on iOS. It is recommended to download and use it. This app explains how you can possibly connect a 2nd MEGABOOM to create real stereo sound, a fantastic option! You can also turn on the speaker in the app if it has turned itself off to save energy. If you listen to hip-hop more than rock, use the app to adjust the equalizer. If you have several MEGABOOMÂs at home, it might be useful to change the name of your Bluetooth device, this is also easy to do in the app. The Bluetooth speaker market is now filled with a wide range. The UE MEGABOOM is in the higher end of this market. At the launch of the speaker, this speaker cost €, currently you pay €. Are there any competitors with better sound? Sure. The B&O BeoPlay A2 has a slightly longer range and also sounds slightly better than the Ultimate Ears. The BeoPlay is €30 more expensive and is not water-repellent. That's why I choose the Ultimate Ears. What makes the Ultimate Ears MEGABOOM so great is the whole. The speaker does not have the best sound in its class, but it still sounds good. Due to its sturdy build, water resistance, features and relatively low price, the MEGABOOM is the Ultimate Bluetooth Speaker on the market.
