Premium experience for a mid-range price: when in doubt, do

I have been sold to Android for many years and have been a fan of the Nexus line in recent years. When my LG Nexus 5X ended up in a bootloop a few weeks ago and the repair took (too) long, CB suggested using shop credit to find a new device. After some internal deliberation, decided to add an amount and to buy back a device 'anno 2017'. But yes: the Nexus line is no longer for sale here and CB does not (yet) sell Pixels, so what should I do?

After going through the necessary review sites, YouTube movies, Tweakers.net and of course CB reviews, my eye fell on the Nokia 8. Without thinking much, I clicked on the order button and I've been using the device for a week. Almost everything that other reviews say is true. So you won't be reading much news here, but read on.

What I loved about the Nexus line was Stock Android. No bloatware or other mess and always the latest security updates available quickly. Well, HMC intends to do this as well and after turning on the device for the first time, I did indeed receive 3 updates in sequence. The latest update is not yet available, but it will most likely be combined with the update to Android 8.0 Oreo which has just been removed from beta and is being prepared for the rollout. In short: tick for the (near) stock Android experience. By the way, did I mention that, of course because of the Snapdragon 835, but certainly also because of the bloatless android version, the phone works very fast?

What also strikes me is that with my average usage, I can get two days and one night (i.e. 36 hours) on 1 battery charge. In fact, it is also difficult, because you no longer need to charge every night: when do you have to charge? :-) Eventually the capacity of the battery will decrease slightly as the months go by, but I'm hopeful that it will last more than 24 hours; something the Nexus 5X failed to do in the end.

As you may have already read/heard in other reviews, HMC has equipped the Nokia 8 with USB-C. Good choice because that makes it just a bit more future-proof and you plug in your phone a little faster after you come home on Friday night after a big night out... Keep in mind that if you still charge with micro-USB now, all your charging cables be immediately unusable. And, be careful with converters and such. Rather go for a good cable.

Other reviews have slammed the camera software that HMC has bundled with Android (one of the few tweaks they've made). I personally find the operation of the app and the quality of the photos fine. Now I have to admit that I don't think the camera is the most important thing on my phone. If I want to take good pictures, I grab a camera. A phone camera is point & shoot for me and that works fine. Just don't be in a hurry for the photos, because from click to photo moment sometimes takes a few seconds. Should this be a breaking point for you, with a little detour you can easily install the Pixel2's camera app on the Nokia 8 and that seems to be a big improvement.

Cons? I can only think of 1 at a time. The combination of Gorilla Glass 5 at the front and the sleek aluminum back provides a very smooth experience, the device sometimes seems to slide off the belt rail by itself, so that it has kissed the ground several times within one week. Advantage: Corning has so far fully delivered on its Gorilla Glass promises. For your information: I opted for the matte-blue variant and that doesn't make it any harder.

I remember that time when everyone had a Nokia 3310 and everyone was still texting. I had whole text conversations then hihi So when I read that Nokia would come out with new mobile phones, I already knew: the next one would be a Nokia.

I am very happy with this Nokia, it is much faster than the Motorola I had before.

The screen is nice and clear and I received an update from Android 8.1 immediately after starting up and switching on WiFi. really super fast! This was also the reason I chose Nokia as I was disappointed with the Motorola being left with udpates so I went looking for something else. I wanted something that works fast and works well and updates quickly and was built solidly, and then I ended up with the Nokia 8. I mainly use it for mail, whatsapp and facebook, and sometimes a game, at home and at work and this Nokia 8 is fine for what I use it for. This Nokia does not heat up, even when charging.

I put a transparent case around it because of the beautiful blue color, I thought it was a shame to put a black case on it ;)

About the camera: I sometimes take pictures and have set up another camera app and with that I get better pictures, especially in the dark, but the camera is not that bad.

I can't think of any negatives and the only thing I can think of now: I should have done it sooner!

I'm very happy with it so it won't go back to Coolblue :)
