Expert review Apple iPhone SE
Apple iPhone SE 128GB Black
- I can take sharp photos with the 12-megapixel camera in portrait mode.
- Thanks to the fast A13 processor, the device can also handle the most demanding apps.
- I can easily charge the iPhone SE without cables via wireless charging.
- The lack of an ultra wide-angle lens and telephoto lens make the camera less versatile.
- You unlock the Apple iPhone SE with Touch ID, since Face ID isn't available on this iPhone.
First impression of the Apple iPhone SE
The well-known white box lies waiting on the table, so it's time for a first impression. In the box, I find the following things:
- Apple iPhone SE
- A short manual
- A SIM card pin
- Apple EarPods
- A Lightning to USB-A cable
- A USB-A adapter (5W)
The device feels sturdy, thanks to the aluminum and glass design. Because of its small, compact size, it fits in your hand comfortably.
Similar design to iPhone 8
The design of the iPhone SE is almost identical to that of the Apple iPhone 8. As a result, the exterior of the device doesn't look particularly innovative. The casing has aluminum edges and a shiny glass back. The device has pretty wide bezels and a home button with haptic feedback. That means it's not a physical button, but it vibrates when I press it.
Fast A13 processor
Apple decided to use the same processor as the devices in the iPhone 11 series for this device, namely the A13 Bionic Chip. That makes this device just as fast. I notice this when I turn the Camera app on and off. I can also effortlessly switch between my Pokemon Go game and the group chat with my friends. Navigating goes smoothly and I haven't noticed any stuttering while using the device.
Single camera lens
The front of the iPhone SE has a 7-megapixel camera and the back a single 12-megapixel wide-angle lens. Thanks to the new A13 processor, the camera is more versatile than you might think at first sight. I can use it to take portrait photos of people, for example. And the rear camera has Smart HDR, so the camera takes several photos at the same time and chooses the photo with the best lighting. This model does lack the night mode and Deep Fusion, which make photos taken in badly-lit environments more detailed.
4.7-inch LCD screen
The iPhone SE has a 4.7-inch LCD Retina display with True Tone support. This automatically adjusts the colors on the screen to the light from your surroundings. I can see this when I'm out in the sun on the balcony. The screen has wide bezels and a home button at the bottom with fingerprint scanner. The screen ratio of the iPhone SE is exactly 16:9, the same ratio that is used for a lot of movies and series. That means these fit on your screen perfectly and the images don't get cropped.
