The appearance of the Apple Pencil 2 (2018)
The Apple Pencil 2 is similar to its predecessor, but it's definitely different. For example, it's thinner and shorter, which gives me the feeling of an actual pencil. In addition, the Apple Pencil 2 is no longer completely round; one side is flat. This doesn't only ensure better grip, but the digital pen also doesn't roll off the table as easily. The silver border has disappeared and has been replaced by a subtle logo on the end of the pen.
The appearance of the Apple Pencil 1 (2015)
The first digital pen from Apple is completely round and has a silver band at the end. On one side, the Apple Pencil 1 is weighted so that it doesn't roll off the table. In practice, this sometimes goes wrong and unfortunately it still rolls off the table. If the digital pen comes to a halt, I always see the Apple logo lying up. When I take hold of the Apple Pencil 1, it's more like a marker than a pencil because of its thickness.
The most important change is the support for movements on the Apple Pencil 2 itself. When I tap twice on the digital pen, I switch between different tools. This is useful, because I can quickly switch between a pen and eraser. Not only is it useful for programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Notes, but also for Ferrite, the professional editing software for audio. In Ferrite, I can link all kinds of different actions to the double tap and work faster and more efficiently.
Charging the Apple Pencil 2
Apple has thought carefully about charging the Apple Pencil 2. I simply place the Apple Pencil 2 on the right side of the new iPad Pro (2018). Charging is done wirelessly and the Pencil 2 is now also beautifully stored. The magnets on the right side of the iPad Pro hold the Apple Pencil 2 firmly in place, even when I carry the iPad Pro in my backpack.
Charging the Apple pencil 1
Charging the Apple Pencil 1 is done by removing the cap at the top and then I put the Pencil 1 in the Lightning port of iPad. Besides having to be careful that I don't lose the cap, I also have to watch out that I don't damage the Lightning connector of the Apple Pencil 1 by making a wrong move with the iPad or the Pencil while it is connected.
Suitable for iPad version
The Apple Pencil 2 is suitable for:
- iPad Pro 12.9 inches
- iPad Pro 11 inches
The Apple Pencil 1 is suitable for:
- iPad (2018/2019)
- iPad Pro
- iPad Mini 5
- iPad Air (2019)
Replaceable Pencil points
If you still have an old Apple Pencil 1, it's not completely unnecessary. The tip of the Apple Pencil 1 also fits on the Pencil 2. When this is due for replacement, I use the point of the Pencil 1. With the Apple Pencil 2, I don't receive an extra tip. I have to purchase this separately in 4 units.
I find the Apple Pencil 2 an indispensable accessory when you own the Apple iPad Pro. The improvements to the appearance, the way of charging, and the extra functionalities make the Apple Pencil 2 more than a nice gadget.
