A lens filter protects the vulnerable glass of your camera lens. You can screw the filter onto the front of your lens. Some filters create certain effects and others can reduce them. For example, a polarization filter counters reflections and a neutral density filter adjusts the light intensity that your lens lets in. You can safely take your filters with you in a filter bag, so they're well-protected. Most filter bags have small compartments for different kinds of filters.
