I first copied a folder on my Dell with size 18Gbyte via the USB 3.0 port to a Samsung SSD T3, then the same via the Thunderbolt port of the Dell. Even though the Samsung SSD T3 is not a Thunderbolt device, I did notice a slight increase in transfer speed. Via the USB 3.0 it took 1min32 sec, via the Thunderbolt it went in 1m20sec.
