When traveling I prefer to use one standard zoom lens, such as this Tamron 28-75mm. Thanks to the zoom range, I don't have to keep changing my lens. I do find that the lens feels a bit heavy when I wear it all day.
Bright lens
The lens has a large maximum aperture of f/2.8, making it very bright. I like that during a holiday. I'm going back to Japan later this year, where I'll probably photograph beautiful temples during the day and capture the nightlife at night. Thanks to the brightness, I take clear photos even in low light, so I use it all day while traveling. At home I mainly used it for portrait photos of family and friends. The aperture creates a soft bokeh, with the background of my photos being blurred. This gives a dreamy effect to my photos.
Versatile zoom range
I see little distortion when I shoot on 28mm. This saves me time in post-processing, because then I don't have to remove distortion. The biggest advantage of this lens is that I zoom in up to 75mm. This makes the lens suitable for many different subjects, from landscapes and architecture to portraits. That versatility is very important to me. I don't want to keep changing my lens during a trip or day out. Fortunately, that is not necessary with this lens, so I leave my other lenses at home. That saves hassle and weight in my backpack.
Video
I also find this lens very nice for video, for example when I make an after-movie of the holiday. The focal length of 28mm is just a bit too zoomed in for vlogs for me, but I do use it to film my surroundings and my traveling companions. This creates very nice memories. The autofocus of the lens is extremely quiet. This way I don't hear any unwanted sounds in the video. It also focuses very quickly when I focus on another subject. This combination makes it a very nice lens for video.
Design
The lens feels nice and sturdy and fits comfortably in the hand. The rubber ring prevents it from slipping out of my hands. It's quite large, but doesn't get much longer when I zoom in. The lens weighs 540 grams, which is not very heavy for a bright zoom lens. Still, I prefer not to wear it all day with my camera around my neck, as I find it just too heavy for that.
