Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G

Very happy with the purchase: I also have a 24-70mm, but it is super heavy and bulky compared to this lens.

I was able to test this lens for a period of 2 weeks. The new Sony FE 24-50mm f2.8 G is a versatile variant on the classic standard zoom. Because this lens only goes up to 50mm, it has remained very compact and light, which makes it a nice lens to take with you on the road. Although it lacks the range that a 24-70mm has, it is a lot more compact and easy to operate. The autofocus works properly, is fast and quiet. even in poor lighting conditions, and this works fine when filming. Very nice if you use the lens for filming or street photography.

The bokeh is beautifully soft thanks to the 11 blades of the diaphragm.

It is possible to take beautiful close-ups with a minimum focusing distance of 19cm, which also works well in practice. Beautiful details emerge from the photos taken. If you do not use the correction software of the camera itself and shoot in raw format, you will see considerable distortion after importing. If you use correction software, this is quite easy to solve, but it is still a small disadvantage.

With this new Sony 24-50 F2.8 lens you cannot avoid comparing it with the other lens in Sony's line-up, the 24-70 F2.8. But that's not a fair comparison; the 24-70 of course has more range, but is also almost twice as expensive. In short, this last lens is in a different price category. And that is an advantage of the 24-50mm: for relatively little money, you have a nice, bright all-round lens. The F2.8 guarantees beautiful blur in the background (bokeh) and with the fast autofocus, you will not easily miss a shot. Another advantage is how compact the lens is. At a glance and approximately, the 24-50mm is half the size and weight of the 24-70mm. Ideal if you are going to carry a lot (street photography, walking in nature, traveling) and the lens fits easily in a small bag. And for video, it's easy to balance on a gimbal. The lens is 90% as sharp in the center of the 24-70mm. Only a 'pixel peeper' will see this difference. However, the sharpness in the edges decreases more compared to the 24-70mm. But again, this is comparing apples and oranges. It would be nice if Sony supplied a case with it. In summary: nice compact and light lens with a nice price tag.
