Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM

Very nice and compact lens, very bright, For video the image stabilizer, which compensates for vibrations up to 5.5 stops, is very useful. Whether you do landscape, street, architecture or travel photography, this Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 USM performs excellently in all situations. A versatile all-rounder. The only downside is perhaps that you cannot take photos directly, but that it first has to "zoom in" a bit to start taking photos.

As a product photographer, I was very curious about this Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8. I already own the 24-105mm f/4.0, but it is quite heavy to carry around. The 28-70mm fits comfortably in the hand, which is nice if you are out and about all day and want to photograph landscapes, which is also what I wanted to use it for. The f/2.8 aperture gives a nice out-of-focus background, which also benefits my product photos. One of the disadvantages I find is the price: it is close to the 24-105mm f/4.0, but has a smaller zoom range. Furthermore, you have to put the lens in the shooting position first, which I have not had with other lenses before and which seems unnecessary to me. Still, it is a versatile lens: one that you can put in your bag more quickly than other zoom lenses.

I was allowed to test this compact and lightweight lens as a temporary replacement for my old EF 24-105 F4. The two biggest differences in favor of the 28-70 are the weight and the aperture. This gives advantages for both photo and video. The 28-70 also gives beautiful bokeh in portraits. Incidentally, the difference in range on the telephoto side, 70 instead of my trusted 105, took some getting used to.

All in all a nice lens, especially when you are going to walk, the fact that you can retract the lens to make it even more compact is certainly a good function. We just have to wait and see how this mechanism holds up in the long term. In addition, the weight has the advantage that it is better balanced on my R6 II for filming freehand.
