My migration from a Synology DS415+ to this Synology DS425+ went smoothly. I transferred the existing WD Red HDDs, and they work in the new NAS (although the drive status remains "Migrated from another system"). If I wanted to add a new WD Red HDD, that's not possible (short of a hack). In that case, I'd have to opt for a Synology HDD.

Transferring drives from the DS415play to the 425+ was easy. They are Seagate and WD drives, so not officially supported by Synology, but they were immediately recognized and migrated. Data and settings were transferred without loss. DSM 7.3 was installed before the migration, so thankfully the non-Synology drives worked just fine.
