Expert review of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is even faster than its predecessor. Canon launched the R6 Mark II in the beginning of November 2022. Are you curious about the new functions of the EOS R6 Mark II? I'll test the autofocus system, the image stabilization, and the speed of the camera. You can read what I think of the performance of the Canon mirrorless camera here.

Canon EOS R6 Mark II

  • The camera photographs with 40 fps, so you can capture fast moving subjects.
  • The improved autofocus system recognizes many subjects, such as horses, and airplanes.
  • Your video images look sharp, because the camera oversamples 4K images from 6K recordings.
  • It doesn't included a memory card.
  • The lens has a fixed aperture, so the light intensity decreases when you zoom in.

First impression of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II

The body of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II feels very sturdy. Because of the large grip, the camera is nice to hold. It has a lot of buttons which I can assign settings to. This way, I can adjust it to my wishes and I understand how it works quicker. I test it with the FR 24-105mm lens. I find that this lens makes the camera pretty heavy. If I take photos the whole day, I get cramps in my hand.

Accurate autofocus system

The autofocus system is very fast. If I bring a person into frame, the camera recognizes the eyes right away. It automatically chooses the eye that's closest to the camera. I find the subject recognition very extensive. It can recognize vehicles like planes and trains. The recognition also works fast. If a subject moves out of frame, it recognizes the subject again when it moves back into frame. The camera even focuses on my subject in dark situations.

Image stabilization EOS R6 Mark II

8-stops image stabilization

I can take photos and videos by hand, thanks to the 8-stops image stabilization. This means that I can halve my shutter speed 8 times. That's useful in darker situations. I want to catch as little light as possible, so I slow down the shutter speed. The slower my shutter speed, the longer the lights falls on the sensor of the camera. The risk of motion blur increases this way. The image stabilization makes sure my photos stay sharp.

Take photos with 40 fps EOS R6 Mark II

Take photos with 40 fps

The EOS R6 Mark II is suitable for sports photography, thanks to the high speed. In burst mode, I can take 40 photos per second with the electronic shutter and with AF tracking. The camera tracks my subject, so it's easier to take a sharp photos. In total, I take about 75 photos before the buffer is full. When I use the mechanical shutter, I can take 12 photos per second. I can easily take photos of moving animals and people.

Video options EOS R6 Mark II

Video options

I can record nice videos in 4K resolution. If you use an external recorder with HDMI, you can record 6K videos at 60 fps which the camera converts to 4K videos. This way, your 4K videos look even sharper and they have less noise. The videos are suitable for TV, for example. The camera has a higher read speed, so I don't run into the rolling shutter effect as often. I notice that when I move the camera quickly while I record. I also see less distortion.

Conclusion

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is a versatile camera. If you're interested in photography and videography, this is the camera for you. I can record in 4K resolution at 60 fps. The high speed makes the camera suitable for sports and action photography. With the electronic shutter, I can take photos at 40 fps. Combined with the fast autofocus system with subject recognition and the 8-stops image stabilization, this results in sharp photos.
