5 tips if your electric cooktop doesn't work

Follow the 5 tips below when the cooktop doesn't work like it should:

• Tip 5: Check if no functions are turned on

Make sure the Perilex plug is properly pushed into the socket. This is heavier than with a normal plug. Check if the cooker circuit in the fuse box is turned on. Do you smell a weird smell while you cook or do you hear a popping sound? The cooktop isn't connected right. Ask a certified electrician to check the cooktop and the plug.

Check if all connectors of your socket still work with a multimeter. Also check if the Perilex plug is connected in the same way as the socket. The ground wire, neutral wire, and phase wire of the plug have to be in the same spot as in the socket. If this isn't the case, a part of the cooktop won't work, for example. When you turn on the cooktop, it uses more power for a short amount of time to turn on. This is called peak load. This can cause your fuses to blow. Check the minimum power supply of your cooktop and the maximum power of the circuit in the kitchen. Is the minimum power supply more than the maximum power? Put other devices on a different circuit or ask an electrician to connect your cooktop to a different circuit.

Do the zones keep turning on and off? Check if the bottom of the pan is magnetic. Place a magnet on the bottom of the pan. If it stays on, the pan is magnetic. If it doesn't stay on, the pan isn't suitable for an induction cooktop. If this isn't the problem, check if the pan isn't too large or too small for the cooking zone.

An induction cooktop that's connected to 1 or 2 phases often uses a power management function. This means that it distributes the power over all cooking zones. Don't try to turn all cooking zones to the highest settings. Does the cooktop have a child safety lock? Check with the manual if it's activated.
