VR puts you in another world from one moment to the next. But REALLY. This Oculus Quest 2 has such a high resolution that the view is crystal clear.
The sound is simply good. Set it to a level that cancels out ambient noise and you'll be completely immersed in the virtual world.
Unfortunately, the Quest 2 doesn't come with any games by default, so you'll have to purchase them from the oculus store or try out demos. You can do this via the oculus quest 2 app on your phone, or the website or in the VR environment.
It is true that you can get your money back if you have not played a game for more than 2 hours.
Payment via the oculus store is possible via paypal or credit card and is secured with a pin code.
The first game I bought is Beat Saber, followed soon after by Space Pirate Trainer. Space Pirate trainer reminded me of Galaga and even further back space invaders. Fantastic game, where you also get quite hot.
Also while playing Beat Saber you will get your movement. Practically all games can be played online and against others.
There are even "party" games, such as Acron Attacik of the squirrels, where the VR player is a tree that has to protect its acorns from squirrels. The squirrels can be played by others via an app on a phone or tablet.
To start playing, first draw a guardian edge on the floor. This edge defines your playing field and must be free of obstacles (tables, chairs, cupboards, etc...). When you threaten to get out of your field while playing, you will be pointed out by a lighted cage. That works great! If you come well outside your playing field, the glasses will switch to passthrough, so that the cameras on the outside of the glasses give you a picture of the actual space in which you are.
While playing you will of course receive feedback via image and sound. In addition, you also get feedback via the controllers. For example, when you are charging a beam, the controller will vibrate from soft to loud. When you smash blocks in half with Beat Saber, you will feel resistance through the controller. This is wonderfully put together and feels natural.
When you put the glasses on, you have to be careful not to touch the lenses, because then they are immediately dirty again and you can clean them with a dry cloth. In the meantime, I've gotten a little more comfortable with it.
The carrying strap is also easy to adjust and the Quest 2 comes standard with a spacer for glasses wearers. You can put the lenses in a number of positions, so that they fit well with the position of your eyes. One has the eyes further apart than the other.
The mentioned battery life of 2.5 hours is correct. Charging is also very fast and an occasional break is not a bad thing either.
The only, often mentioned, disadvantage is the mandatory creation of a Facebook account. I have therefore created a separate facebook account for the Oculus.
I've been using the glasses for a week now and plan to use them for many more. Connecting to my laptop, for example, which is possible via the USB-C cable from the charger and trying out the SDK.
We will not be able to avoid buying more games, but with a price ranging from 5 to 30 euros, that is also doable. In terms of numbers, the range of games and apps did not disappoint me either. Still plenty to discover!
This Oculus Quest 2 256GB is my first experience with VR and it completely blew me away.
