I tested the Netgear Orbi 770 series, specifically the 2-pack model, the 772. When opening the box, you immediately notice how compact and sleek the units are. I expected them to be a bit smaller than the 970 series, but they are almost as big. So they do stand out in your living room. The packaging contains a card that refers to the Netgear Orbi app for installation.
The installation via the app goes smoothly and within 10 minutes I have everything connected. If you have to work with cables, it will take you longer. I start by connecting the main router to my modem. The app guides me step by step and gives useful tips for placing the second station, so that the distance to the main router is not too great. The installation is a big plus. Even without knowledge of WiFi, you can easily install the routers.
During use, I notice that the connection is stable and fast. While my previous mesh system worked well, it is noticeable that the Orbi 770 with only two stations offers a similar range as my old system with three stations. So the range of the 770 series is good. However, for a 2-story house I would recommend choosing 3 stations.
To test the system, I let multiple devices download large files simultaneously, streamed 4K videos on my smart TV and gave commands to various smart devices. The Orbi 770 series handles these tasks effortlessly. In online WiFi speed tests, I almost reach the maximum speed of my internet subscription. The further away from the router the speed decreases slightly, but it is still much faster than your average router. An additional station can improve this further.
Price is a consideration with this system. Although the Orbi 770 series is more affordable than the high-end models, it is still an investment. With the Orbi 770 series you are prepared for the future. Internet speeds continue to increase and the demands on routers increase. This system can last for years to come.
