Which AMD Ryzen processor suits me best?
You're about to purchase a laptop, desktop, or custom-built PC. But do you need an AMD Ryzen 3, 5, 7, or Threadripper? In the article on this page, I'll explain how you can choose the best processor that suits you.
Something for everyone
Whether you only type and watch series, the AMD Ryzen processors are suitable for every usage situation. AMD has a wide assortment of processors. I'll talk about the biggest series on this page: the AMD Ryzen series. Series like the AMD Athlon and AMD A are mainly suitable for basic tasks like browsing the internet, sending emails, and text processing.
AMD Ryzen series
Ryzen 3 for the everyday user
Choose the AMD Ryzen 3 if you use your laptop for everyday tasks like watching series on Netflix, making reports, and browsing the internet. Playing a game like League of Legends or a quick edit of a vacation photo is also no problem for the Ryzen 3.
Ryzen 5 for the intensive user
You can choose the Ryzen 5 if you get started with photo editing, gaming, or working with mutliple programs at the same time. The Ryzen 5 easily runs most games at high settings. Don't want to purchase an extra video card? Choose a model with Vega 11 graphics, so you get enough processing power for a game of Fortnite at low settings.
Ryzen 7 for the demanding user
The AMD Ryzen 7 processor is for the user that edits (professional) videos, plays the latest games, and doesn't want to worry about system requirements of programs. Using programs like AutoCAD, Adobe After Effects, and Sony Vega is a lot more pleasant, because you can do all tasks smoothly.
Ryzen Threadripper
The best option for graphic processing power
There's also the Ryzen Threadripper processor series. This AMD series is designed for the professional user for who an AMD Ryzen 7 isn't sufficient anymore. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor make optimal use of a technology that's called multithreading. With this, multiple processes in your PC are calculated at the same time by the processor. For intensive tasks like rendering 3D models or editing in 4K resolution, the Ryzen Threadripper series is one of the fastest processors that's available.
Also for gaming?
The Ryzen Threadripper series has good performance in every aspect. If you mainly use your computer for playing games, a Ryzen 7 is probably a better choice. This is because games don't use multithreading as much, so the Treadripper isn't optimally used. This doesn't mean that the Threadripper is unsuitable for gaming. On the contrary, it might be a bit too much.
(even) more extras
Vega Graphics
Some processors have a built-in video card. This means you can get started right away with playing games at low settings, without needing an external video card, for example.
Overclock?
Are you an advanced computer user and are you looking for a model that can overclock well? Check if a model can overclock well or if it can't do that. It's very simple: models that can overclock have an X in their name, for example AMD Ryzen 7 2700X.
Motherboard
AMD Ryzen processors need a different motherboard than the Intel versions. That has to do with the connector (socket) on the motherboard. The Ryzen 3, 5, and 7 series use the AM4 socket. The Ryzen Threadripper is much larger and needs a large socket: the TR4.
Finally
You know now which AMD Ryzen procssor you need. Whether you choose a Ryzen 3, 5, 7, or Threadripper, with an AMD Ryzen you always get quality.
