Expert review of the LG QNED85
The LG QNED85 is the starter model LG QNED television. LG QNED televisions use a special Quantum Dot technology, which produces immersive images with bright colors. Are you curious about what I think of this TV? In this review, I'll tell you all about it.
LG QNED85
- The QNED technology and the 10-bit screen ensure a rich, detailed color representation.
- Thanks to the 100Hz refresh rate, fast-moving images look smooth.
- You can stream images to the TV via Apple AirPlay and the built-in Chromecast.
- Due to Edge-Lit Local Dimming, the black parts of the screen aren't always truly black.

First impression of the QNED85
When I unpack the LG QNED85, the thin screen catches my eye right away. The television looks very sleek in my living room. I turn it on and see bright and realistic colors, even in the smart menu. They really splash off the screen. For a nature lover like me, this is a big plus. I expect that when I watch a nature documentary, it'll feel like I'm walking through a tropical rainforest myself.
Immersive colors
I'm very impressed by the vibrant colors of the QNED85. This television has a 10-bit screen, which means it can display over a billion colors. Thanks to this wide color gamut, the images look realistic. Behind the TV screen is a layer of Quantum Dots. These are tiny particles, each with its own color. This allows me to see even more color details, such as the subtle color differences in the scales of a fish.
Good contrast along the edges of the screen
This television uses Edge-Lit Local Dimming. This means that there are zones that light up or dim along the edges of the screen. This results in excellent contrast along the edges of the image. I do notice that the contrast is lower in the center of the screen, because there are no zones there. The starry sky I'm watching is slightly less bright here. I can also see a light glow around the moon. Fortunately, I don't find this distracting in most movies or series.
Fine viewing angle with a little reflection
Thanks to the Quantum Dot display, this TV has a high brightness. This means I can see few reflections on the screen, even when I'm sitting in a bright room. When the sun shines on the screen, there are slightly more reflections. I particularly notice this when I'm sitting at an angle to the television. I still see rich and bright colors from this angle, but the image is slightly less clear.
Less full sound
This TV has 2 speakers and no built-in soundbar or subwoofer. This makes the sound a bit flat. This is fine when I'm watching a talk show or the news, but I don't find the sound immersive enough when watching a movie. The sound effects sound less intense, such as an explosion. For a richer sound, I recommend a soundbar. This'll take your entire viewing experience to the next level.
Stand adjustable in height and width
The QNED85 stands on 2 leg stands, which gives it a sleek look. I can adjust these stands both in height and width. I find this particularly useful when placing a soundbar in front of the TV. If I raise the stand, the soundbar doesn't block the screen. I can also set the feet further apart, so the soundbar fits between them perfectly.
Conclusion
If you find it most important that a television displays rich colors, the QNED85 is a good choice for you. This TV has a wide color gamut, which allows you to completely immerse yourself in a beautiful nature documentary. It's also convenient that you can adjust the height and width of the leg stands. This makes the TV suitable for any interior. Would you prefer a TV with high contrast? A TV with mini-LED local dimming would be a better fit for you, such as the LG QNED91.
