In my house I had no fixed internet connection on the top floor and also pretty bad WiFi. However, there is no good option for me to pull UTP cable upwards. This Devolo 1200+ Starter Kit offers an excellent solution for both issues. The device is easy to install and within 5 minutes I had a very fast LAN upstairs and a perfect WiFi signal everywhere.
Unfortunately, there is also one big drawback! I immediately heard a sort of continuous electronic noise (crackle) over my speakers downstairs as soon as the device was turned on. Also quite loud, really annoying. Homeplugs like these obviously have to send the signal through the power network in your home, so a certain degree of 'pollution' on your power network will be unavoidable. But still... considering the high price I didn't expect this. Both the Devolo and my (power) amplifier are well grounded, so that can't be the cause. I use an Adcom pre and power amplifier and Dynaudio speakers; not cheap hi-fi. Could Devolo not have used other frequencies? Frequencies that cannot be picked up by amplifiers at all?
In the end I now had to connect the Devolo to another group, which significantly reduced the noise over the speakers. Although unfortunately still audible if you really put your ear directly in front of the speaker...
For anyone considering this Devolo (or a home plug from another brand): noise over your speakers can be a serious problem! Maybe it won't matter in your situation, or it might be completely inaudible. But maybe not. I advise you to test the Devolo at home before you throw away the packaging and the receipt. If it is possible to pull UTP cable to the rooms where you have poor WiFi: always choose that.
