Look
If I put the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X side by side, the difference in designis the first thing I notice. I think the Phone 8 looks similar to the iPhone 7, where the iPhone X has a completely new design.
Old and new
Apple iPhone 8: familiar design
The iPhone 8 has the recognizable design Apple also used for the iPhone 7. Like its predecessor, the iPhone 8 has a round home button I can use to I unlock my iPhone with a fingerprint. In addition to the round home button, the edges at the top and bottom of the screen are Apple characteristics. The iPhone 8 also has an LED 4.7-inch Retina HD display, like the iPhone 7. Personally, I think this is a great screen size. On a larger screen, typing a message on WhatsApp is tricky because I usually use my iPhone with one hand.
iPhone X: Apple iPhone X: new design
Unlike the iPhone 8, the iPhone X doesn't look like its predecessors. The 5.8-inch Super Retina HD display takes up the entire front of the device. This creates a borderless effect, making the screen larger than the iPhone 8's. Where the iPhone 8 has an LED display, the iPhone X is has an OLED screen. In my opinion, the color rendering and brightness of an OLED screen is more beautiful. Apple has removed the fingerprint scanner on the borderless screen and introduces a facial recognition feature called Face ID. The camera analyzes 30,000 points in my face and creates a 3D image.
Casing and charging
The iPhone 8 (Plus) and iPhone X also have similarities. Both smartphones have a glass casing and support the Qi functionality. That means you can charge them wirelesly; a first for Apple.
Side by side
iPhone 8: wirelessly chargeable thanks to glass casing
I think the glass of the iPhone 8 has a sleek look. The glass design is luxurious, but also allows the phone to support the Qi functionality. That means I can charge my iPhone wirelessly. I like this, because the iPhone 8 has only one lightning connector, which is now available to connect my Apple earbuds. This way, I can charge my iPhone while listening to my favorite music. Out of habit, I will likely charge my iPhone with a cable a few times.
iPhone X: wirelessly chargeable thanks to glass casing
The iPhone X also has a glass casing and is Qi compatible as well, so I can charge my iPhone wirelessly. Just like the iPhone 8, the glass gives the phone a high-quality appearance. Another similarity between these models is the waterproof casing. Both iPhones have an IP67 certification, so I don't have to worry about accidents involving water.
Camera
Another difference between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X is the camera. The iPhone 8 has a single camera where the iPhone X has a dual camera. The selfie camera of the iPhone X is better, compared to the iPhone 8.
Photos
iPhone 8: single camera
The Apple iPhone 8 has a 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. Because of this, I can still take sharp photos if I accidentally move my iPhone. The camera has a large shutter, so I can take clear pictures in low light as well. In addition, the iPhone 8 has a 7-megapixel camera on the front. The screen lights up because of the Retina Flash, so I can take visible selfies at night as well. The front camera also supports animoji, which creates 3D emoji animations based on my facial expression.
iPhone X dual camera
The dual camera isn't a new feature for Apple; it was first used on the iPhone 7 Plus. The vertical placement of the dual camera is a first for Apple. Thanks to the dual camera, I can zoom without loss of quality and create a depth of field effect in my photos with the portrait mode. In addition, I can set the light in my photos with portrait lighting. This way, my photos get a professional look. The Apple iPhone X is the first Apple smartphone with a portrait mode selfie camera.
Conclusion
If I had to choose between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X, I'd choose the latter. The new design, the borderless screen, and the improved camera are enough to convince me to buy the iPhone X. I'll have to pay more for these upgrades than for the iPhone 8.
