What should I do if my Fitbit doesn't synchronize?

You've completed your run wearing your Fitbit and just plopped down on the couch to check your performance. You open the Fitbit app, tap 'Sync Now' and… nothing. If your Fitbit isn't syncing with your phone, it could be an issue with the Bluetooth connection. In this article, I provide you with a checklist you can follow to find out what the problem is. Before you know it, you'll be able to see your performance on your phone again.

What could be the problem?

  • Has your Fitbit been set up correctly? If you've connected the Fitbit properly, the data collected by your Fitbit should sync with your smartphone.
  • Is your phone completely up to date? It might be that your phone needs a software update. If your smartphone doesn't have the latest software, certain functionalities might not work.
  • Is your Bluetooth connection on? Check on your phone if your have turned on Bluetooth. Is your phone connected to other devices via Bluetooth? If your smartphone is already connected to other devices, such as a music system or headset, that might cause the connection to your activity tracker to be interrupted.
  • Is no other device connected to your Fitbit? Your Fitbit tracker can only be connected to 1 device. Make sure your tablet or partner's phone isn't connected to your Fitbit.
  • Perhaps your Fitbit's battery is low? If the battery is in energy-saving mode, different functions such as its Bluetooth connection, won't work as well.

Step-by-step plan

iPhone or iPad

If none of the options above are available, follow these steps:

  • Completely close the Fitbit app.
  • Go to Settings> Bluetooth. Turn bluetooth off and on again.
  • Open the Fitbit app.
  • If your Fitbit still does not sync, turn your iPhone or iPad off and on again.
  • Open the Fitbit app.
  • If your Fitbit is still not sync, switch your activity tracker, smartwatch or sports watch off and on again.
  • Still not Syncing your Fitbit? Then log in to your Fitbit account on another smartphone, tablet or computer and try to sync again.
  • If this does not work, remove all Fitbit devices from your account and from your list of paired Bluetooth devices. Now try to sync again.
  • Connect the Fitbit to your smartphone again.

Android smartphone

  • Complete the Fitbit app completely and restart the app.
  • Go to Settings> Bluetooth. Turn bluetooth off and on again.
  • Open the Fitbit app.
  • If your Fitbit is still not sync, turn off your activity tracker, smartwatch or sports watch.
  • Uninstall the Fitbit app and reinstall it.
  • Still not Syncing your Fitbit? Then log in to your Fitbit account on another smartphone, tablet or computer and try to sync again.
  • If this does not work, remove all Fitbit devices from your account and from your list of paired Bluetooth devices. Now try to sync again.

Tips

Turn on the 'Always Connected' option on your Fitbit app for an improved Bluetooth connection between your phone and your tracker. This option will unfortunately cause your Fitbit's battery to drain more quickly.

If you switch on the option 'All Day Sync' in the Fitbit app, your tracker will sync with your Fitbit app multiple times a day. That way, you won't have to press 'Sync Now' every time you want to see your data. It will happen automatically. Unfortunately, this function will make the batteries of both your Fitbit and smartphone drain more quickly.
