How does Apple Pay work?

Paying for something has never been this easy. You simply hold your iPhone or Apple Watch against the payment terminal to pay successfully. It works the same as a contactless payment, only you don't have to grab your debit card anymore. I'll tell you how Apple Pay works on your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac.

How do I set up Apple Pay?

Before I pay with Apple Pay, I add my debit card to the Wallet app. This works as follows:

  1. I open the Wallet app and tap '+' in the top right corner.
  2. I follow the steps on the screen to register my debit card.
  3. I press 'Next' to check my bank.
  4. Request approved? My debit card can now be found in Wallet. That means Apple Pay is now ready for use.

Before I pay with Apple Pay, I add a debit card to my Apple Watch. This is how it works:

  1. I open the Apple Watch app on my iPhone and tap 'My Watch'.
  2. I select 'Wallet & Apple Pay'.
  3. I follow the steps on the screen to add my debit card.
  4. The bank checks whether my debit card is eligible for Apple Pay.
  5. Request approved? Apple Pay is now ready for use.

MacBook

On a MacBook, I can use Apple Pay to make online payments. I can set up Apple Pay by following these steps:

  1. I open 'System Preferences' and choose 'Wallet & Apple Pay'.
  2. I add my debit card and follow the steps on the screen.
  3. The bank checks whether my debit card is eligible for Apple Pay.
  4. Request approved? Apple Pay is now ready for use.

How do I pay with Apple Pay in the store?

  1. If I hold my iPhone against the payment terminal, the set Apple Pay card usually appears automatically. Does this not happen? Then it works as follows:
  • iPhone with Face ID: I double click the button on the side of my iPhone. I use Face ID to scan my face or I enter my access code.
  • iPhone with Touch ID: I put my finger on the fingerprint scanner.
  1. Next, I hover the top of my iPhone over the reader.
  2. If the display states 'Succesful' and displays a check, the payment is successful.

I pay with my Apple Watch

  1. I turn Apple Watch with the screen facing the reader. Usually, the set Apple Pay card automatically appears on the screen. If that doesn't happen, I tap the button on the side twice.
  2. I hold Apple Watch in front of the reader and wait until the payment is successful.
  3. The Apple Watch lightly taps my wrist when the payment is successful.

How do I pay with Apple Pay in the Coolblue app?

To pay with Apple Pay in the Coolblue app, I choose Apple Pay as my payment method. This is how it works:

  1. If I have an iPhone, the black Apple Pay button appears automatically during checkout. I click this button.
  2. I confirm the payment.
  • iPhone with Face ID: I press the button on the side twice and I scan my face.
  • iPhone with Touch ID: I put my finger on the fingerprint scanner.
  • Apple Watch: I press the button on the side twice.
  1. If the display states 'Succesful' and displays a check, the payment is successful.

To pay with Apple Pay in the Coolblue app, I choose Apple Pay as my payment method. This is how it works:

  1. If I have an iPad, the black Apple Pay button appears automatically during checkout. I click this button.

  • iPad with Touch ID: I put my finger on the fingerprint scanner.

How do I pay with Apple Pay in Safari?

To pay with Apple Pay in Safari, I choose Apple Pay as my payment method. This is how it works:

  1. If I have an Apple device, the black Apple Pay button appears automatically during checkout. I click this button.
  2. I confirm the payment:
  • iPhone/iPad with Face ID: I press the button on the side twice and I scan my face.
  • iPhone/iPad with Touch ID: I put my finger on the fingerprint scanner.
  • Apple Watch: I press the button on the side twice.
  1. If the display states 'Succesful' and displays a check, the payment is successful.

  1. If I have a MacBook, the black Apple Pay button appears automatically during checkout. I click this button.
  2. I follow the instructions on the Touch Bar and I put my finger on the fingerprint scanner.
  3. If the display states 'Succesful' and displays a check, the payment is successful.

What if my Mac doesn't have Touch ID? If so, I'll need an iPhone or Apple Watch to confirm my payments.

  1. I make sure that I'm logged using my Apple ID on all my devices.
  2. I switch on Bluetooth on my Mac.
  3. I tap the black Apple Pay button to pay.
  4. Since I don't have Touch ID, I use my iPhone or Apple Watch to confirm the payment:
  • iPhone with Face ID: I press the button on the side twice and I scan my face.
  • iPhone with Touch ID: I put my finger on the fingerprint scanner.
  • Apple Watch: I press the button on the side twice.
  1. If the display states 'Succesful' and displays a check, the payment is successful.
